Saint Maximus was born in Decomer Province in France. From his early years, he lived a life of solitude and discipline, training himself in the control of his senses and desires. Eventually, he resolved to dedicate himself entirely to the spiritual life, and thus joined the monastic community of Lérins, which was under the direction of Saint Honoratus.
When Saint Honoratus was appointed Archbishop of Arles in 426, he designated Maximus as his successor by appointing him the second abbot of the Lérins monastery. According to the writings of Sidonius Apollinaris, the monastery experienced a renewal of spiritual fervor under the wise leadership of Saint Maximus. The monks admired his gentle nature, shining example, and deep virtue, and followed him joyfully and willingly without resistance to the monastic rule.
Saint Maximus was also endowed with the divine gift of performing miracles, which brought him great renown and further attested to his sanctity. Many people came from afar to seek his guidance and blessing. Because of his growing fame, some began to urge him to accept episcopal office. Wishing to avoid such honors, Maximus would often flee into the forests to live in seclusion.
Despite his reluctance, he was eventually consecrated Bishop of Riez (Provence) in 434, through the influence of Saint Hilary of Arles. As bishop, Saint Maximus became one of the most prominent prelates of the Church in Gaul during his time.
Throughout his episcopate, he continued to live with monastic austerity, wearing his simple monastic habit and strictly observing the rules of the monastery. Several homilies once wrongly attributed to Eusebius of Emesa were later recognized as the authentic writings of Saint Maximus.
He took part in the Councils of Riez (439), Orange (441), and Arles (454). Saint Maximus died soon after, and his relics were buried in the Church of Riez, where he continues to be venerated as a holy bishop and abbot.
