November 22:

Saint Cecilia was one of the most highly venerated saints in ancient Rome. Apart from her martyrdom, there are no historically verifiable details about her life. According to traditional accounts preserved in prayer books, Saint Cecilia led a life immersed in prayer and contemplation. She had vowed to remain a virgin for her entire life.

Her parents had arranged her marriage to a young man named Valerian. On their wedding night, Cecilia whispered to him, “I have a secret to tell you — I have an angel of God who guards my body with jealous care.” Valerian promised to believe her if he could see the angel himself. Cecilia told him that this would be possible only if he received baptism. Valerian was baptized by Pope Urban, and upon returning, he saw Cecilia praying in her little room, with a heavenly angel standing beside her.

Overwhelmed with awe, Valerian watched as the angel, pleased with Cecilia’s chastity, presented them with crowns of lilies and roses — symbols of purity and martyrdom — which never withered and could be seen only by those who loved chastity. Valerian then prayed that his brother Tiburtius might also be converted, and the angel granted this wish.

When Tiburtius came to congratulate the newlyweds, he was astonished by the flowers’ beauty. On learning their origin, he too received baptism. Cecilia then told him, “Today I receive you as my brother-in-law because your love for God has led you to renounce idols. The Lord who gave me my husband has also given me you as his brother.”

Hearing of their conversion, the Roman prefect Almachius sent his officer Maximus to arrest them. On the night before their execution, Cecilia and the brothers instructed Maximus in the faith, and he, along with his household, received baptism.

The next morning, Cecilia encouraged Valerian and Tiburtius to face martyrdom with courage. Before the prefect, they proclaimed boldly, “We believe in Jesus Christ, the true Son of God, who has chosen us as His servants. We will never deny Him.” The prefect ordered their execution.

Cecilia too was condemned — first to be suffocated in a bath, but miraculously she remained unharmed, praying, “Father, I thank You, for through Your Son, even fire has no power over me.” Then the executioner was ordered to behead her. After three blows, he failed to kill her (Roman law forbade a fourth strike), and she was left bleeding, half-decapitated.

Even in this state, Cecilia continued to comfort the poor and dedicated her home to become a church. She survived for three more days, praying and giving final instructions.

By the fourth century, a church dedicated to her stood on the very site of her home in Trastevere, Rome. Her martyrdom is believed to have occurred around 230 A.D., during the reign of Emperor Alexander Severus.

When her tomb was opened in 1599, her body was found incorrupt, lying in a cypress coffin, exactly as she had fallen at her death. Sculptor Stefano Maderno, who witnessed the discovery, created a famous statue depicting her in that same posture.

Since the Middle Ages, Saint Cecilia has been honored as the patron saint of church music and musicians, symbolizing the harmony of faith and art in praising God.
