Saint Raphael Kalinowski was born the son of Professor Andrew Kalinowski, a faculty member at the Nobility College, and Josepha Poionska Kalinowska. He received his early education at his father’s school. Although he felt a calling to the priesthood, he first desired to complete his college education.
He studied zoology, chemistry, and agricultural science at the Hori-Horki Agricultural Institute in Russia, and later military engineering at the Military Engineering Academy in Saint Petersburg.
In 1857, he joined the Russian military as a lieutenant. He was the supervisor and planner for the construction of the railway line between Kursk and Odessa. In 1862, he was promoted to captain and stationed at Brest-Litovsk. There, he founded a catechetical school, where he taught religion and led many to the faith, personally covering all expenses. Anyone interested was welcome to attend.
Saint Raphael supported the Polish uprising of 1863. Resigning from the Russian army, he became Minister of War for the insurgent forces in the Vilna region, on the condition that he would never condemn anyone to death nor permit executions. On March 25, 1864, he was arrested by Russian authorities.
In June 1864, he was sentenced to death, but the sentence was commuted for fear that his execution might create a political martyr. Instead, he was exiled to forced labor in the salt mines of Siberia. For much of his imprisonment, he was held in Irkutsk, where his relics are now enshrined in a new church built there to honor him.
Released in 1873, he left his native Lithuania and settled in Paris, France, where he worked as a teacher for several years. Finally, in 1877, he responded to God’s call by joining the Carmelite Order at Graz in Austria, taking the religious name Raphael. He then studied theology in Hungary and later joined the Carmelite monastery at Czerna, Poland, where he was ordained a priest on January 15, 1882.
He devoted himself to reuniting the divided Carmelites in Poland and to strengthening the unity of the Church. In 1889, he founded a Carmelite convent for nuns at Wadowice, Poland. He also worked closely with Blessed Alphonsus Mary Marurek.
Among both Catholics and Orthodox Christians, Saint Raphael was revered as a spiritual guide and confessor. A zealous parish priest, he spent long hours hearing confessions and assisting the faithful in spiritual matters.
On June 22, 1983, Pope John Paul II canonized him at Krakow, Poland.
