Saint Odo, known as the light of the famous Abbey of Cluny, was a man through whom the monastery achieved a true renewal of monastic and priestly life. Though he was the second abbot of Cluny, Saint Odo began his spiritual journey as a follower of Saint Martin of Tours.

He was born the son of Ebb I, Lord of Déols, and received his early education in the court of the Duke of Aquitaine. Later, he studied in Paris under Remigius of Auxerre. While serving as a canon at the church of Saint Martin in Tours, Odo came to know Blessed Berno, the founder of the Cluniac Order.

Soon afterward, he joined the Benedictine monastery at Baume, which was part of the Cluniac reform movement. In 927, he succeeded Berno as the Abbot of Cluny. Later, Pope John XI relieved him of that position and instead entrusted him with the mission of reviving monasteries in Italy and France that had fallen into decline.

In this mission, Saint Odo achieved great success, earning the title “Restorer of Monasteries.” He was the one who established the monastic rule and discipline that Cluny would follow for the next century, serving as a model of monastic life across Europe. His efforts to rekindle interest in religious life brought about a spiritual transformation throughout medieval Europe.

At the request of the Pope, he later went to Italy as a papal envoy of peace, to reconcile two rival rulers who were competing for political power there. On his way back from Rome in 942, he fell ill and stopped at the Abbey of Saint Julian in Tours to celebrate the feast of Saint Martin on November 11. He took part in the festivities but passed away shortly after, on November 18, 942.

During the days of his illness, Saint Odo composed hymns in praise of Saint Martin.

In addition to his role as a monastic reformer, Saint Odo also left behind many literary works and hymns of worship. His relics are preserved at L’Isle-Jourdain in France.

Saint Odo of Cluny not only loved Saint Martin of Tours deeply, but from his youth he also strove to imitate Saint Martin’s compassion toward the poor and beggars.
