Saint Elizabeth of Hungary was the daughter of King Andrew II of Hungary. At the age of four, she was taken to the royal court of Ludwig, Landgrave of Thuringia, who was to be her future husband. Their marriage took place in 1221. After her marriage, Saint Elizabeth faithfully fulfilled her duties as a wife as well as her responsibilities as a servant of God.

During the nights, she often remained awake in prayer for long hours. She was very zealous in performing works of charity, helping widows, orphans, the sick, and the poor with great generosity. During a famine, she distributed all the grain stored in her granaries among the needy.

She personally cared for lepers in the hospital she had established, washing their feet and even kissing their hands and wounds. She also provided shelter for those who had nowhere to stay.

In 1227, during a Crusade led by Emperor Frederick II, her husband died. After his death, Saint Elizabeth renounced her royal status and dedicated herself entirely to a life of prayer and service.

Clad in simple clothing, she later joined the Order of Saint Francis, embracing a life of humility and poverty. Her later years were filled with suffering and trials. Due to the interference of her enemies, all her possessions were confiscated, and she was forced to leave Wartburg. Out of fear of her enemies, no one in Eisenach dared to offer her refuge.

After many pleas, a swineherd of the Landgrave permitted her to stay in an abandoned pigsty. No one was allowed to visit or help her. With her three young children, including an infant, she endured the bitter cold and extreme hardship.

In 1228, Saint Elizabeth entered the Third Order of Saint Francis at Marburg, receiving the religious habit. There she built a hospital on the small piece of land that remained to her and lived in a mud hut. She spent the rest of her life in service to the poor and the sick, earning her livelihood by sewing and needlework.

Though young in age, she was great in virtue and charity. Saint Elizabeth of Hungary passed away in 1231, at the age of only 24 years, to rest forever in the Lord.
