Saint Albert the Great, known as the “Light of Germany,” was called “the Great” because he was truly an encyclopedia of knowledge. He was born in 1193 at Lauingen on the Danube. His education took place at Padua, where, under the influence of the second Dominican General, he joined the newly founded Order of Preachers (Dominicans) in 1223.

Soon after, he was sent to Germany, where he taught in various cities, especially in Cologne. Among his students was the famous Saint Thomas Aquinas. In 1248, Albert obtained his master’s degree in Sacred Theology at Paris.

In 1254, he was appointed provincial of the Dominican Order in Germany. For a short time, he also served under Pope Alexander II as a papal theologian and was later appointed bishop of Regensburg. However, after two years, he returned to his community in Cologne.

There, he continued his mission as a teacher, counselor, and peacemaker, serving as a true shepherd to his people. He died at the age of 87. On December 11, 1931, Pope Pius XI canonized him and declared him a Doctor of the Church.

Saint Albert spent much of his life writing. Twenty-one volumes of his works include extensive commentaries on Aristotle (who became known in Germany largely through Albert’s writings) and interpretations of Sacred Scripture. According to tradition, he designed the floor plan of the famous Cologne Cathedral.

In the Middle Ages, Saint Albert stood out as one of Germany’s greatest scholars, excelling in natural science, theology, and philosophy alike.
