316-ല്‍ പന്നോനിയയിലെ ഒരു പട്ടണമായ സബരിയായില്‍ ബെനഡിക്റ്റന്‍ ആശ്രമത്തിനടുത്തായാണ് വിശുദ്ധ മാര്ട്ടിന് ജനിച്ചത്. അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ മാതാപിതാക്കളുടെ ഇഷ്ടത്തിനെതിരായി വിശുദ്ധന്‍ ക്രിസ്ത്യാനികളുമായി ബന്ധപ്പെടുകയും തന്റെ പത്താമത്തെ വയസ്സില്‍ തന്നെ അദ്ദേഹം മാമോദീസാക്ക് മുമ്പുള്ള ക്രിസ്തീയ മതപ്രബോധനങ്ങള്‍ സ്വായത്തമാക്കുകയും ചെയ്തു. പതിനഞ്ചാമത്തെ വയസ്സില്‍ വിശുദ്ധന്‍ സൈന്യത്തില്‍ ചേരുകയും കോണ്‍സ്റ്റാന്റിയൂസ്, ജൂലിയന്‍ തുടങ്ങിയ ചക്രവര്‍ത്തിമാര്‍ക്കായി സേവനമനുഷ്ടിക്കുകയും ചെയ്തു.
ഈ സേവനത്തിനിടക്ക് ഒരു ദിവസം അദ്ദേഹം ആമിയന്‍സ്‌ കവാടത്തില്‍ വച്ച് നഗ്നനും ദരിദ്രനുമായ ഒരു യാചകനെ കണ്ടുമുട്ടി. ഈ യാചകന് അദ്ദേഹത്തോട് യേശുവിന്റെ നാമത്തില്‍ ഭിക്ഷ യാചിച്ചു. ഈ സമയം വിശുദ്ധന്റെ പക്കല്‍ തന്റെ വാളും പട്ടാളക്കാരുടെ മേലങ്കിയും മാത്രമാണ് ഉണ്ടായിരുന്നത്. അദ്ദേഹം തന്റെ വാളെടുത്ത് മേലങ്കി രണ്ടായി കീറി ഒരു ഭാഗം ആ യാചകന് കൊടുത്തു. അന്ന് രാത്രിയില്‍ പകുതി മാത്രമുള്ള മേലങ്കി ധരിച്ച നിലയില്‍ ക്രിസ്തു അദ്ദേഹത്തിന് പ്രത്യക്ഷപ്പെടുകയും വിശുദ്ധനോട് ഇപ്രകാരം അരുള്‍ ചെയ്യുകയും ചെയ്തു “എന്റെ പ്രബോധനങ്ങള്‍ക്കനുസരിച്ചു ജീവിക്കുന്ന മാര്ട്ടിന്, ഈ മേലങ്കി നീ എന്നെ ധരിപ്പിച്ചു.”
മാമ്മോദീസ സ്വീകരിക്കുമ്പോള്‍ മാര്ട്ടിന് 18 വയസ്സ് പ്രായമായിരുന്നു. സൈന്യത്തിലെ തന്റെ അധികാരിയുടെ നിര്‍ദ്ദേശപ്രകാരം അദ്ദേഹം രണ്ട്‌ വര്‍ഷം കൂടി സൈന്യത്തില്‍ ജോലി ചെയ്തു. പിന്നീട് സൈനിക ജോലി ഉപേക്ഷിക്കുന്നതിനുള്ള അപേക്ഷ സമര്‍പ്പിച്ചപ്പോള്‍ ജൂലിയന്‍ ചക്രവര്‍ത്തി ഇദ്ദേഹത്തെ ഭീരുവെന്ന് മുദ്രകുത്തി ആക്ഷേപിച്ചു. അപ്പോള്‍ കുരിശടയാളം വരച്ചുകൊണ്ട് വിശുദ്ധന്‍ ചക്രവര്‍ത്തിയോട് ഇപ്രകാരം പറഞ്ഞു “വാളും പരിചയക്കാളുമധികം ശത്രു സൈന്യനിരകളെ തകര്‍ക്കുവാന്‍ എനിക്ക് ഈ കുരിശടയാളം കൊണ്ട് സാധിക്കും.”
സൈന്യത്തില്‍ നിന്നും പിന്മാറിയ നേടിയ വിശുദ്ധന്‍ പോയിട്ടിയേഴ്സിലെ മെത്രാനായ വിശുദ്ധ ഹിലാരിയുടെ അടുക്കല്‍ പോവുകയും പൌരോഹിത്യ പട്ടം സ്വീകരിക്കുകയും ചെയ്തു. പിന്നീട് ടൂര്‍സിലെ മെത്രാനായി വാഴിക്കപ്പെട്ടു. നഗരത്തിന് അടുത്തുതന്നെയായി അദ്ദേഹം ഒരു ആശ്രമം (മാര്‍മൌട്ടിയര്‍) പണികഴിപ്പിക്കുകയും ചെയ്തു. ഈ ആശ്രമത്തില്‍ പതിനെട്ട് സന്യാസിമാരോടൊപ്പം ഏറ്റവും വിശുദ്ധിയോട് കൂടിയ സന്യാസജീവിതം ആരംഭിച്ചു.
ട്രിയറിലെ രാജധാനിയിലേക്കുള്ള അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ നിരവധി സന്ദര്‍ശനങ്ങള്‍ക്കിടക്ക് ഒരു മാന്യന്‍ തന്റെ മകളെ സുഖപ്പെടുത്തുവാനായി ഇപ്രകാരം അപേക്ഷിച്ചു, “ഞാന്‍ ശക്തമായി വിശ്വസിക്കുന്നു അങ്ങയുടെ പ്രാര്‍ത്ഥനക്ക് എന്റെ മകളെ സുഖപ്പെടുത്തുവാന്‍ സാധിക്കും.” മാര്ട്ടിന് പരിശുദ്ധ തൈലം കൊണ്ട് ഈ പെണ്‍കുട്ടിയെ സുഖപ്പെടുത്തുകയും ചെയ്തു. ഈ അപൂര്‍വ ദൈവീകാത്ഭുതത്തിനു സാക്ഷ്യം വഹിച്ച ടെട്രാഡിയൂസ് അദ്ദേഹത്തില്‍ നിന്നും മാമ്മോദീസാ സ്വീകരിക്കുകയുണ്ടായി.
പിശാചുക്കളെ ഒഴിപ്പിക്കുന്നതിനുള്ള ദൈവീക വരവും അദ്ദേഹത്തിന് ഉണ്ടായിരുന്നു. ഒരിക്കല്‍ പിശാച് പ്രഭാപൂര്‍ണ്ണമായ രാജകീയ വേഷത്തില്‍ അദ്ദേഹത്തിന് പ്രത്യക്ഷപ്പെടുകയും താന്‍ ക്രിസ്തുവാണെന്ന വ്യാജേന അദ്ദേഹത്തോട് സംസാരിക്കുകയും ചെയ്തു. പിശാചിന്റെ ഈ കുടിലത മനസ്സിലാക്കിയ വിശുദ്ധന്‍ “ദൈവപുത്രനായ ക്രിസ്തു ഒരിക്കലും രാജകീയ വേഷവും കിരീടവും ധരിച്ചു കൊണ്ട് വരും എന്ന് പ്രവചിച്ചിട്ടില്ല” എന്ന മറുപടി നല്‍കുകയും ഉടന്‍തന്നെ പിശാച് അദ്ദേഹത്തെ വിട്ടു പോവുകയും ചെയ്തു.
മരിച്ചവരായ മൂന്ന് ആളുകളെ അദ്ദേഹം ജീവിതത്തിലേക്ക്‌ കൂട്ടികൊണ്ട് വന്നതായി പറയപ്പെടുന്നു. ഒരിക്കല്‍ വിശുദ്ധ കുര്‍ബ്ബാന അര്‍പ്പിച്ചു കൊണ്ടിരിക്കെ അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ ശിരസ്സിന് മുകളില്‍ ഒരു തിളക്കമുള്ള വലയം കാണപ്പെടുകയുണ്ടായി. പ്രായമേറിയ അവസ്ഥയില്‍ തന്റെ രൂപതയിലെ ദൂരത്തുള്ള കാന്‍ഡെസ് എന്ന ഇടവക സന്ദര്‍ശിക്കുന്നതിനിടക്ക്‌ അദ്ദേഹം കടുത്ത പനിബാധിതനായി കിടപ്പിലായി. ഒരു മടിയും കൂടാതെ നശ്വരമായ ഇഹലോക ജീവിതമാകുന്ന തടവറയില്‍ നിന്നും തന്നെ ഉടനെതന്നെ മോചിപ്പിക്കണമെന്ന് അദ്ദേഹം കര്‍ത്താവിനോട് അപേക്ഷിച്ചു.
ഇതുകേട്ടു കൊണ്ട് നിന്ന അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ ശിക്ഷ്യന്മാര്‍ ഈറന്‍ മിഴികളുമായി വിശുദ്ധനോട് ഇപ്രകാരം അപേക്ഷിച്ചു “പിതാവേ, എന്തു കൊണ്ടാണ് നീ ഞങ്ങളെ ഉപേക്ഷിക്കുന്നത്? ആശ്രയമറ്റ നിന്റെ മക്കളെ നീ ആരെ ഏല്‍പ്പിക്കും?”. ഇതില്‍ ദുഃഖിതനായ വിശുദ്ധന്‍ ദൈവത്തിനോട് ഇപ്രകാരം അപേക്ഷിച്ചു “ദൈവമേ, നിന്റെ മക്കള്‍ക്ക്‌ ഇനിയും എന്റെ ആവശ്യം ഉണ്ടെങ്കില്‍, ഞാന്‍ ആ പ്രയത്നം ഏറ്റെടുക്കുവാന്‍ തയ്യാറാണ്, എന്നിരുന്നാലും നിന്റെ ഇഷ്ടം നിറവേറട്ടെ” കടുത്തപനിയിലും മുകളിലേക്ക് നോക്കി കിടന്ന അദ്ദേഹത്തോട് ചുറ്റുംകൂടിനിന്നവര്‍ വേദനകുറക്കുന്നതിനായി വശം തിരിഞ്ഞു കിടക്കുവാന്‍ ആവശ്യപ്പെട്ടു.
“സോദരന്‍മാരെ, ഭൂമിയെ നോക്കികിടക്കുന്നതിലും, എന്റെ ആത്മാവ് ദൈവത്തിന്റെ പക്കലേക്കെത്തുവാന്‍ സ്വര്‍ഗ്ഗത്തെ നോക്കി കിടക്കുവാനാണ് ഞാന്‍ ആഗ്രഹിക്കുന്നത്” എന്ന് പറഞ്ഞുകൊണ്ട് വിശുദ്ധന്‍ ആ ആവശ്യം നിഷേധിച്ചു. തന്റെ മരണത്തിന് തൊട്ടുമുന്‍പ്‌ പൈശാചിക ആത്മാവിനെ കണ്ട വിശുദ്ധന്‍ കോപാകുലനായി. “നിനക്ക് എന്താണ് വേണ്ടത്‌ ഭീകര ജന്തു? നിനക്ക് എന്നില്‍ നിന്നും നിന്‍റെതായ ഒന്നും തന്നെ കാണുവാന്‍ സാധിക്കുകയില്ല” എന്ന് ആക്രോശിച്ചു കൊണ്ട് വിശുദ്ധന്‍ അന്ത്യശ്വാസം വലിച്ചു. തന്റെ 81-മത്തെ വയസ്സില്‍ 397 നവംബര്‍ 11നാണ് വിശുദ്ധന്‍ മരിച്ചത്‌.
Saint Martin was born in 316 in Sabaria, a town in Pannonia, near a Benedictine monastery. Contrary to his parents’ wishes, he associated himself with Christians and, even before receiving baptism, learned Christian teachings by the age of ten. At the age of fifteen, he joined the army and served under the emperors Constantius and Julian.
During his service, one day at the gate of Amiens, he encountered a poor beggar, naked and destitute. The beggar asked him for alms in the name of Jesus. At that time, Martin had only his sword and the military cloak he wore. He drew his sword, cut the cloak in half, and gave one portion to the beggar. That night, Christ appeared to him wearing the very half-cloak, saying, “Martin, who lives according to my teachings, has clothed me with this garment.”
Martin was eighteen when he received baptism. Due to the command of his military superior, he continued in service for two more years. Later, when he requested release from military duty, Emperor Julian accused him of cowardice. Then, making the sign of the Cross, Martin replied: “With this sign of the Cross, I can defeat enemy armies more powerfully than with sword or shield.”
After leaving the army, Martin went to Saint Hilary, the Bishop of Poitiers, and received priestly ordination. He was later made the Bishop of Tours. Near the city, he founded a monastery (Marmoutier), where he began a deeply holy monastic life with eighteen monks.
During one of his visits to the royal court at Trier, a nobleman approached him, saying, “I firmly believe that your prayer can heal my daughter.” Martin anointed the girl with holy oil, and she was miraculously healed. Tetradius, who witnessed this extraordinary miracle, received baptism from Martin.
Saint Martin was also endowed with the grace to cast out demons. Once, the devil appeared to him in dazzling royal garments, pretending to be Christ. But Martin recognized the deception and responded: “The Son of God never came in royal robes or with a crown.” At these words, the devil fled.
It is said that Saint Martin restored three dead persons to life. Once, while celebrating the Holy Eucharist, a shining halo of light was seen above his head.
In his old age, while visiting a distant parish named Candes in his diocese, he became severely ill with fever. He prayed earnestly to be freed from this earthly prison.
But hearing this, his disciples tearfully said:
“Father, why are you leaving us? To whom will you entrust your children who have no one but you?”
Moved by compassion, Martin prayed:
“O Lord, if your people still need me, I am willing to continue; yet let Your will be done.”
Even under great fever, when those around him asked him to turn onto his side to ease his pain, he refused, saying:
“Brothers, let me look toward heaven, not toward the earth, as my soul journeys toward God.”
Just before his death, seeing an evil spirit before him, he grew angry and cried out:
“Wicked beast, what do you want? You shall find nothing of yours in me!”
Thus the saint breathed his last.
Saint Martin died at the age of 81, on November 11, 397.
