The reign of Saint Leo the First, who was both a Pope and a Doctor of the Church, lasted from 440 to 461. Among the bishops who sat upon the throne of Saint Peter, he is one of the most renowned. The Church bestowed upon him the title “Leo the Great.” We know only very little about his early life. His foremost mission was to restore the dignity of the Roman Papal Office and to re-establish the honor of the Holy Church. It is said that there has never been another Pope in world history who shone so greatly in both ecclesiastical matters and in the political sphere.
He was also highly esteemed as a writer. The continuous sermons he delivered in churches are greatly valued in theological literature. It was under his presidency that the Council of Chalcedon was convened.
During his papacy, the king Attila invaded Italy. After besieging and burning Aquileia for three years, Attila turned his focus toward Rome. Furious, his army had already begun attempting to cross the region where the River Po meets the Mincio. It was there, in 452, that Saint Leo personally met Attila, confronted him, and persuaded him to withdraw. Saint Leo then returned to Rome, where he was welcomed with great joy.
Some years later, the ruthless Genseric entered the city. But by the strength of his holy life and his divine eloquence, Saint Leo restrained Genseric from acts of massacre and destructive violence. This took place in 455.
He was also very zealous concerning the order and reverence of the liturgy. His renowned liturgical collection The Leonine Sacramentary contains many prayers and writings. Some theologians believe that the Advent liturgical prayers were composed by this very Saint.
