ഒരു ക്രിസ്ത്യന് പടയാളിയായിരുന്നു വിശുദ്ധ തിയോഡര്. തന്റെ ജീവിതം ക്രിസ്തുവിനായി മാറ്റി വെച്ച അദ്ദേഹം A.D 303-ല് അമേസീയിലെ സൈബെലെയിലെയിലുള്ള വിഗ്രഹാരാധകരുടെ ക്ഷേത്രം തീ കൊളുത്തി നശിപ്പിച്ചു. സൈന്യങ്ങളുടെ തലവന് അദ്ദേഹം തന്റെ വിശ്വാസം ഉപേക്ഷിക്കുകയും തന്റെ പ്രവര്ത്തിയില് പശ്ചാത്തപിക്കുകയും ചെയ്യുകയാണെങ്കില് വിശുദ്ധനോട് കരുണ കാണിക്കാമെന്ന് പറഞ്ഞു.
എന്നാല് വിശുദ്ധനാകട്ടെ തന്റെ വിശ്വാസം മുറുകെപ്പിടിച്ചു. തുടര്ന്ന് വിഗ്രഹാരാധകര് അദ്ദേഹത്തെ തുറുങ്കിലടക്കുകയും വാരിയെല്ല് കാണത്തക്കവിധം അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ മാംസം കൊളുത്തുകള് ഉപയോഗിച്ചു പിച്ചിചീന്തുകയും ചെയ്തു. ക്രൂരമായ ഈ മര്ദ്ദനങ്ങള്ക്ക് ഇടയിലും വിശുദ്ധന് ഇങ്ങനെ പാടി “ഞാന് എപ്പോഴും എന്റെ ദൈവത്തെ വാഴ്ത്തും; ദൈവസ്തുതികള് എപ്പോഴും നാവിലുണ്ടായിരിക്കും”. പ്രാര്ത്ഥനയിലും ദൈവ-സ്തുതികളിലും മുഴുകിയിരിക്കെ നവംബര് 9ന് അദ്ദേഹത്തെ ജീവനോടെ കത്തിക്കുകയാണുണ്ടായത്.
വിശുദ്ധ തിയോഡറിനെ കുറിച്ചുള്ള നിസ്സായിലെ വിശുദ്ധ ഗ്രിഗറിയുടെ പ്രശംസാ വചനങ്ങള് ഇപ്പോഴും നിലവിലുണ്ട്. മദ്ധ്യയുഗം മുതല് തന്നെ ‘കാജെതായില്’ ഈ വിശുദ്ധനെ ആദരിച്ച് തുടങ്ങിയിരുന്നു. ഗ്രീക്കുകാര് ഈ വിശുദ്ധനെ സൈന്യങ്ങളുടെ മദ്ധ്യസ്ഥനായാണ് ബഹുമാനിക്കുന്നത്. ഏഴാം നൂറ്റാണ്ടിന്റെ ആരംഭത്തില് റോമില് വിശുദ്ധനായി ഒരു പള്ളി സമര്പ്പിക്കപ്പെട്ടു. റോമില് വിശുദ്ധ കൊസ്മാസിന്റെയും ഡാമിയന്റെയും ദേവാലയത്തിന്റെ ഒരു ഭാഗത്ത് ഈ വിശുദ്ധന്റെ ചിത്രം മാര്ബിളില് ആലേഖനം ചെയ്തിരിക്കുന്നു.
Saint Theodore was a Christian soldier. Having dedicated his life to Christ, in A.D. 303 he set fire to and destroyed the temple of the idol-worshippers at Cybele in Amasea. The commander of the armies told him that if he renounced his faith and repented of his action, mercy would be shown to him.
But the Saint firmly held on to his faith. The idol-worshippers then imprisoned him and tore his flesh with iron hooks until his ribs were visible. Even in the midst of these brutal tortures, the Saint sang:
“I will bless the Lord at all times; His praises shall always be upon my lips.”
While he was immersed in prayer and praise, he was burned alive on November 9.
Words of praise spoken about Saint Theodore by Saint Gregory of Nyssa still exist today. From the Middle Ages onward, this Saint has been honored in Cajetan. The Greeks honor him as the intercessor and protector of armies. At the beginning of the seventh century, a church was dedicated to him in Rome. A depiction of this Saint carved in marble can be seen in part of the Church of Saints Cosmas and Damian in Rome.
