ചരിത്രപരമായി ഇന്ന് വിശുദ്ധ സ്നാപക യോഹന്നാന്റെ മാതാപിതാക്കളായ വിശുദ്ധ സക്കറിയായുടെയും എലിസബത്തിന്റെയും തിരുനാളാണ്. പല വിശുദ്ധരുടെയും പേരായ എലിസബത്ത് എന്ന പേരിന്റെ അര്ത്ഥം ‘ആരാധിക്കുന്നവൾ’ എന്നാണ്. ഈ വിശുദ്ധയെ കുറിച്ച് ബൈബിളില് പറഞ്ഞിരിക്കുന്നത്, വിശുദ്ധ ലൂക്കായുടെ സുവിശേഷ പ്രകാരം സക്കറിയായുടെ ഭാര്യയും വിശുദ്ധ സ്നാപക യോഹന്നാന്റെ അമ്മയുമാണ് എന്നാണ്.
പുരോഹിതനായ ആരോണിന്റെ പിന്തലമുറക്കാരിയുമാണ് ഈ വിശുദ്ധ. സുവിശേഷമനുസരിച്ച് ജൂദിയ എന്ന മലയോര പട്ടണത്തില് തന്റെ ഭര്ത്താവിന്റെ ഒപ്പം കറപുരളാത്ത ജീവിതം നയിച്ചവളാണ് വിശുദ്ധ. ഒരു മകന് വേണ്ടിയുള്ള തുടര്ച്ചയായ പ്രാര്ത്ഥനകളുമായി ജീവിച്ച എലിസബത്ത്, പ്രായമേറിയപ്പോള് ഇനിയൊരിക്കലും തനിക്കൊരു മകനുണ്ടാവില്ലെന്ന് മുൻവിധി നടത്തി. ഒരു ദിവസം സക്കറിയാ ദേവാലയത്തില് ശുശ്രൂഷ ചെയ്തു കൊണ്ടിരിക്കുന്ന വേളയില് അള്ത്താരയുടെ വലതു വശത്തായി വിശുദ്ധ ഗബ്രിയേല് മാലാഖ പ്രത്യക്ഷപ്പെടുകയും എലിസബത്തിനു ഒരു മകന് ജനിക്കുമെന്ന് വെളിപ്പെടുത്തുകയും ചെയ്തു.
അവള്ക്ക് ആറുമാസം ഗര്ഭമായിരിക്കുമ്പോളാണ് പരിശുദ്ധ കന്യകാമറിയത്തിന്റെ സന്ദര്ശനം. മഹാന്മാരായ പല കലാകാരന്മാരുടെയും ചിത്രങ്ങള്ക്ക് പാത്രമായിട്ടുള്ള ഹൃദയ സ്പര്ശിയായിട്ടുള്ള ഒരു സന്ദര്ഭമാണ് ഈ സന്ദര്ശനം. ഗബ്രിയേല് മാലാഖ പിന്നീടാണ് മറിയത്തോട് അവളെ കുറിച്ചുള്ള ദൈവീക പദ്ധതി വെളിപ്പെടുത്തുന്നത്. അതിനോടൊപ്പം തന്നെ അവളുടെ ചാര്ച്ചക്കാരിയായ എലിസബത്ത് കുഞ്ഞിനെ വഹിക്കുന്ന കാര്യവും അവളെ അറിയിക്കുന്നു. ഇതുകേട്ട് സന്തോഷവതിയായ മറിയം താനും ഉടന് തന്നെ ഒരു കുഞ്ഞിന്റെ അമ്മയാകും എന്ന കാര്യം അറിയിക്കുന്നതിനും എലിസബത്തിന്റെ സന്തോഷത്തില് പങ്ക് ചേരുന്നതിനായി അവളെ സന്ദര്ശിക്കുവാൻ പുറപ്പെട്ടു. നസ്രത്തിലെ പൊടിനിറഞ്ഞ വഴികള് താണ്ടിയാണ് അവള് ജൂദിയായിലെത്തുന്നത്.
മറിയത്തിന്റെ ആഗമനത്തിൽ സന്തോഷവതിയായ എലിസബത്ത് രക്ഷകന്റെ വരവിനെ കുറിച്ച് മുന്കൂട്ടി അറിഞ്ഞ “എന്റെ രക്ഷകന്റെ അമ്മ” എന്ന് പറഞ്ഞുകൊണ്ടു അവളെ സ്വാഗതം ചെയ്തു. എലിസബത്തിന്റെ അഭിസംബോധന ഇപ്രകാരമായിരുന്നു “നീ സ്ത്രീകളില് അനുഗൃഹീതയാണ്. നിന്റെ ഉദരഫലവും അനുഗൃഹീതം. എന്റെ കര്ത്താവിന്റെ അമ്മ എന്റെ അടുത്തു വരാനുള്ള ഈ ഭാഗ്യം എനിക്ക് എവിടെ നിന്ന്? ഇതാ, നിന്റെ അഭിവാദനസ്വരം എന്റെ ചെവികളില് പതിച്ചപ്പോള് ശിശു എന്റെ ഉദരത്തില് സന്തോഷത്താല് കുതിച്ചുചാടി. കര്ത്താവ് അരുളിച്ചെയ്ത കാര്യങ്ങള് നിറവേറുമെന്ന് വിശ്വസിച്ചവള് ഭാഗ്യവതി”.
എലിസബത്ത് കുഞ്ഞിന് ജന്മം നല്കിയപ്പോള് അവളുടെ കൂട്ടുകാരികളും അയല്ക്കാരും അവളുടെ ഒപ്പം ആഹ്ലാദിച്ചിരുന്നതായി സുവിശേഷത്തില് പറയുന്നുണ്ട്. കൂടാതെ, കുഞ്ഞിനെ പരിഛേദനത്തിനായി കൊണ്ടു വന്നപ്പോള് എല്ലാവരും കുഞ്ഞിന് പിതാവിന്റെ പേര് നല്കണം എന്ന് തീരുമാനിച്ചപ്പോള് എലിസബത്താണ് “അവന്റെ പേര് യോഹന്നാന് എന്നായിരിക്കണം” എന്ന് പറഞ്ഞത്. വിശുദ്ധ സക്കറിയായുടെയും തിരുന്നാള് വിശുദ്ധ എലിസബത്തിന്റെ ഒരേ ദിവസം തന്നെയാണ് ആഘോഷിക്കുന്നത്. വിശുദ്ധന് ആബിയായുടെ വംശത്തില് പിറന്നവനും, പുരോഹിതനുമാമായിരുന്നു.
അക്കാലങ്ങളിലെ കീഴ് വഴക്കം അനുസരിച്ച് ദേവാലയശുശ്രൂഷകള് നിറവേറ്റുന്നതിന് ഓരോ ആഴ്ചയിലും ഓരോ പുരോഹിതരെ നറുക്കിട്ടെടുക്കുക പതിവായിരുന്നു. അതനുസരിച്ച് ആ ആഴ്ചത്തെ ദേവാലയശുശ്രൂഷകള് സക്കറിയായുടെ കടമയായിരുന്നു. ഇങ്ങനെ ഏകനായി അൾത്താരയിൽ സുഗന്ധദ്രവ്യങ്ങള് പുകക്കുകയും മറ്റ് ശുശ്രൂഷകളില് ഏര്പ്പെട്ട് നില്ക്കുമ്പോളാണ് അൾത്താരയുടെ വലതു വശത്തായി വിശുദ്ധ ഗബ്രിയേല് മാലാഖ പ്രത്യക്ഷപ്പെട്ടത്. ദര്ശനം കിട്ടിയ മാത്രയില് സക്കറിയ ഭയപ്പെട്ടു.
അപ്പോള് ഗബ്രിയേല് മാലാഖ, വിശുദ്ധനോട് തന്റെയും ഭാര്യയുടെയും പ്രാര്ത്ഥനകൾ നിറവേറപ്പെടാൻ പോവുകയാണെന്നും അവർക്ക് ഉടൻ തന്നെ ഒരു മകന് ജനിക്കുമെന്നും അവനെ യോഹന്നാന് എന്ന പേരില് വിളിക്കണമെന്നും അറിയിച്ചു. സക്കറിയാക്ക് ഇത് വിശ്വസിക്കുവാന് കഴിഞ്ഞില്ല. കാരണം, തനിക്കും തന്റെ ഭാര്യക്കും പ്രായമേറി എന്നതായിരുന്നു അദ്ദേഹത്തെ അലട്ടിയ ദുഃഖം. തന്റെ ഭയത്തെ കീഴ്പെടുത്തി കൊണ്ട് സക്കറിയാ വിശുദ്ധ ഗബ്രിയേല് മാലാഖയോട് ഒരു അടയാളത്തിനായി ആവശ്യപ്പെട്ടു. അദ്ദേഹം ഇപ്രകാരം സംശയിച്ചതിനാല്, ഈ അരുളപ്പാട് നിറവേറ്റപ്പെടുന്നത് വരെ സക്കറിയാ ഊമയായിരിക്കുമെന്നറിയിച്ചതിന് ശേഷം മാലാഖ അപ്രത്യക്ഷപ്പെട്ടു.
ഉടൻ തന്നെ ദേവാലയത്തില് നിന്നും പുറത്ത് വന്ന സക്കറിയ ഊമയായിരിക്കുന്നത് കണ്ട ജനങ്ങള് അദ്ദേഹത്തിന് ദൈവത്തിന്റെ ദര്ശനം ഉണ്ടായെന്ന് വിശ്വസിച്ചു. എലിസബത്ത് ഗര്ഭവതിയാവുകയും ക്രിസ്തുവിന്റെ വഴിയൊരുക്കുവാനായി പിറന്ന വിശുദ്ധ യോഹന്നാനു ജന്മം നല്കുകയും ചെയ്തു. എട്ട് ദിവസത്തിന് ശേഷം കുഞ്ഞിന്റെ പരിഛേദന സമയത്താണ് എലിസബത്ത് കുഞ്ഞിനു യോഹന്നാന് എന്ന പേരിടണം എന്നാവശ്യപ്പെട്ടത്.
ആ സമയത്തും സംസാരിക്കുവാന് കഴിയാതിരുന്ന സക്കറിയ ഒരു ഫലകം ആവശ്യപ്പെടുകയും അതില് “യോഹന്നാന് എന്നാണ് അവന്റെ പേര്” എന്നെഴുതുകയും ചെയ്തു. ഈ സമയത്ത് അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ സംസാര ശേഷി തിരികെ ലഭിച്ചു. സംസാര ശേഷി ലഭിച്ച ഉടന് തന്നെ അദ്ദേഹം ദൈവത്തെ വാഴ്ത്തി സ്തുതിക്കുവാന് തുടങ്ങി. പുതിയ നിയമത്തില് ഇതിൽ കൂടുതലായൊന്നും സക്കറിയായെ കുറിച്ച് പറയുന്നില്ല.
Historically, today is the feast of Saints Zechariah and Elizabeth, the parents of Saint John the Baptist. The meaning of the name Elizabeth—a name borne by many saints—is “the one who worships”. According to the Holy Bible, as recorded in the Gospel of Saint Luke, she was the wife of Zechariah and the mother of Saint John the Baptist.
She was a descendant of the priestly line of Aaron. According to the Gospel, she lived a blameless and upright life with her husband in a hill country town of Judea. Elizabeth prayed for many years for a child, but when she grew old she believed she would never again have the joy of motherhood. One day, while Zechariah was offering incense in the Temple, the Archangel Gabriel appeared to him at the right side of the altar and revealed that Elizabeth would bear a son.
When Elizabeth was six months pregnant, the Virgin Mary visited her. This is one of the most tender and moving scenes depicted by many great artists. Before Gabriel appeared to Mary, he also revealed God’s divine plan to her and informed her that Elizabeth, her kinswoman, was already with child. Filled with joy, Mary set out—traveling the dusty roads of Nazareth to Judea—both to share her own news and to rejoice with Elizabeth.
At Mary’s arrival, Elizabeth, filled with the Holy Spirit, recognized the coming of the Savior and welcomed Mary saying:
“Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb! But why is this granted to me, that the mother of my Lord should come to me? For the moment the sound of your greeting reached my ears, the child in my womb leaped for joy. Blessed is she who believed that the Lord’s promises to her would be fulfilled!”
When Elizabeth gave birth, her relatives and neighbors rejoiced with her. Later, when the child was brought for circumcision, everyone insisted he should be named after his father. But Elizabeth said, “No—his name shall be John.”
The feast of Saint Zechariah is celebrated on the same day as that of Saint Elizabeth. Zechariah belonged to the priestly division of Abijah. According to the ancient tradition, priests were chosen by lot to carry out Temple duties each week. That week, the service of the Temple fell to Zechariah. While offering incense alone at the altar, the Archangel Gabriel appeared to him. Zechariah was terrified.
Gabriel told him that his prayers and those of his wife had been heard, and they would soon have a son, whom they must name John. Zechariah hesitated to believe this because he and his wife were advanced in age. Overcome with fear, he asked Gabriel for a sign. Because he doubted, the angel declared that he would remain speechless until the prophecy was fulfilled.
When Zechariah came out of the Temple and could not speak, the people realized he had seen a vision. Elizabeth conceived and gave birth to Saint John, who would prepare the way for Christ.
Eight days later, at the child’s circumcision, when Elizabeth insisted on the name John, Zechariah—still unable to speak—asked for a writing tablet and wrote:
“His name is John.”
Immediately his speech returned, and he began to praise and glorify God.
The New Testament tells us nothing further about Zechariah.
