Saint Charles Borromeo was born into an aristocratic and wealthy family in Milan, Italy. Born in his family’s grand estate, he lived a very comfortable life. Like most wealthy people of the sixteenth century, he enjoyed athletics, music, art, and delicious foods. His maternal uncle, from the famous Medici family, was the Pope at that time.
When Charles was 23 years old, this uncle, the Pope, appointed him a cardinal and entrusted him with various official administrative responsibilities. He also sent him as his official legal representative to places like Bologna and the Swiss Cantons. When Frederick Borromeo passed away, many thought that Charles would leave the priesthood, get married, and become head of the Borromeo family.
However, Charles entrusted those responsibilities to another uncle and continued his life as a priest. Soon, he was appointed bishop of Milan — a diocese that had been without a resident bishop for a long time. Although he was born into a wealthy family, much of his life was spent in hardship and endurance.
During the famine of 1570, Charles had to find food for three thousand people for three months. Six years later, when a plague struck and lasted two years, he appointed priests, lay brothers, and faithful workers to provide food and care to nearly 60,000 to 70,000 people living in the Alpine villages of his diocese.
He personally cared for the dying and the sick. During this period of service to the poor and suffering, he incurred large debts. Feeling ignored by church authorities, one priest became resentful and attempted to kill him. While Charles was kneeling in prayer before the altar, the priest shot at him from behind.
At first, Charles thought he had been fatally wounded. But the bullet could not pierce his outer vestment. It only caused a minor wound. Blending love and self-sacrifice, Borromeo brought renewal to the faithful entrusted to him.
During a synod, he addressed his fellow bishops with these words:
“An angry Judge asks us: If you came to give new life to my Church, why have you shut your eyes? If you are shepherds of my sheep, why did you allow them to scatter? You who are the salt of the earth have lost your flavor. You who are the light of the world sit in darkness and never shine. You have done nothing except seek the favor of men. Therefore, you apostles, examine the firmness of your apostolic mission.”
Charles’ love for the poor and needy was great.
When the plague devastated Milan, he sold his own bed and all his household furnishings to help the sick and the poor. After that, he slept only on wooden planks. Like a compassionate father, he visited the poor and the sick, comforting them and giving them the Holy Eucharist with his own hands. As a true intercessor, he labored day and night, pleading before the heavenly throne for mercy.
Once, he led a penitential procession. Barefoot, with a rope around his neck, blood streaming from his feet, and a wooden cross on his shoulders, he walked in prayer. Through this act, Charles gave his people an example of sacrifice to protect them from the punishment of God. Wearing a garment of sackcloth, his body covered in ashes, holding an image of the Crucified Christ, Charles died in 1584 at the age of 46. His tomb is located in a church in Milan.
