മനസ്താപത്തിലും, പ്രാര്ത്ഥനയിലും, ഉപവാസത്തിലും ദൈവഭക്തിയിലും മുഴുകി ജീവിച്ച വിശുദ്ധ മാര്ട്ടിന് ഡി പോറസിന്റെ ഓര്മ്മദിവസം സഭ ഇന്ന് ആഘോഷിക്കുകയാണ്. 1579-ല് പെറുവില് സ്പാനിഷ് പ്രഭുവിന്റെയും പനാമയില് നിന്നുള നീഗ്രോ വംശജയായ സ്ത്രീയുടെയും മകനായിട്ട് വിശുദ്ധന് ജനിച്ചത്. അമ്മയുടെ കറുത്തനിറവും പ്രകൃതവുമായിരുന്നു മാര്ട്ടിനും ലഭിച്ചത്. ഇക്കാരണത്താല് ഉന്നതകുലനായ അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ പിതാവ് വിശുദ്ധനെ പതുക്കെ പതുക്കെ വീട്ടില് നിന്നും പുറത്താക്കി.
ഒരു ശസ്ത്രക്രിയാവൈദ്യന്റെ സഹായിയായി ജോലി നോക്കിയ യുവാവായ മാര്ട്ടിന് അധികം താമസിയാതെ ഡൊമിനിക്കന് സഭയില് അല്മായ സഹോദരനായി ചേരുകയും ലിമായിലെ ഒരു സന്യാസ വൈദ്യശാലയില് നടത്തിപ്പുകാരനായി നിയമിതനാവുകയും ചെയ്തു. അധികം താമസിയാതെ തന്നെ നഗരത്തിലെ രോഗികളെയും ആഫ്രിക്കയില് നിന്നും പെറുവിലെത്തിച്ച അടിമകളെയും ശുശ്രുഷിക്കുന്നതില് അദ്ദേഹം തല്പ്പരനായി. അതിനാലാണ് അദ്ദേഹത്തെ മൃഗങ്ങളെ കൈകളില് പിടിച്ചുകൊണ്ടു നില്ക്കുന്നതായി പലപ്പോഴും ചിത്രീകരിച്ചിട്ടുള്ളത്. പല അത്ഭുതസിദ്ധികളും അദ്ദേഹത്തിന് ലഭിച്ചിട്ടുണ്ടായിരുന്നു.
പ്രാഥമികമായ ഒരു പരിശീലനമോ വിദ്യാഭ്യാസമോ ലഭിക്കാത്ത ഇദ്ദേഹത്തോട് അക്കാലത്തെ മതപണ്ഡിതന്മാരായ പലരും ദൈവസംബന്ധമായ കാര്യങ്ങളില് സംശയനിവാരണം വരുത്തുക പതിവായിരുന്നു. ലിമായിലെ വിശുദ്ധ റോസ്, ധന്യനായ ജോണ് മസ്സിയാസ് തുടങ്ങിയവര് ഈ വിശുദ്ധന്റെ അടുത്ത സുഹൃത്തുക്കള് ആയിരുന്നു. സാമൂഹ്യ നീതിയുടെ മാധ്യസ്ഥനായി ഇദ്ദേഹത്തെ അനൌദ്യോഗികമായി പലരും വിളിക്കുന്നു. തന്റെ ജീവിതകാലം മുഴുവനും, ഡൊമിനിക്കന് വൈദ്യശാലയില് ക്ഷുരകന്, തോട്ടം തൊഴിലാളി, മുഖ്യരോഗീ ശുശ്രുഷകന് തുടങ്ങിയ നിലകളിലാണ് ചിലവഴിച്ചത്.
ഏതെങ്കിലും വിദേശ പ്രേഷിത ദൌത്യത്തില് വെച്ചു രക്തസാക്ഷി മകുടം ചൂടണമെന്ന് അതിയായി ആഗ്രഹിച്ച മാര്ട്ടിന് അത് സാധ്യമല്ലാത്തതിനാല് നിരന്തരമായ പ്രായശ്ചിത്വങ്ങളിലൂടെ തന്നെ തന്നെ ദൈവത്തിനു സമര്പ്പിച്ചു. അതിനു പ്രതിഫലമായി ദൈവം അദ്ദേഹത്തിന് ശൂന്യതയില് നില്ക്കുന്നതിനും വിവിധ സ്ഥലങ്ങളില് ഒരേസമയം കാണപ്പെടുന്നതിനുമുള്ള അത്ഭുതകരമായ കഴിവുകള് പ്രദാനം ചെയ്തു. വിശുദ്ധ മാര്ട്ടിന്റെ സ്നേഹം എല്ലാവരിലും പ്രകടമായിരുന്നു. മനുഷ്യരോടും മൃഗങ്ങളോടും അദ്ദേഹം കാരുണ്യത്തോടെ പെരുമാറി. കീടങ്ങളോടു പോലും അദ്ദേഹം സ്നേഹപൂര്വ്വമായിരുന്നു ഇടപെട്ടത്.
തന്റെ സഹോദരിയുടെ വീട്ടില് പട്ടികള്ക്കും പൂച്ചകള്ക്കുമായി അദ്ദേഹം ഒരു ശുശ്രുഷാലയം തന്നെ നടത്തിയിരുന്നു. ആധ്യാത്മികതയുടെ നിറകുടമായിരുന്ന അദ്ദേഹം തന്റെ സഭയിലെയും മറ്റ് മെത്രാന്മാര്ക്കും ദൈവശാസ്ത്രപരമായ കുഴക്കുന്ന പ്രശ്നങ്ങള് പരിഹരിക്കുന്നതില് പ്രശസ്തനായിരിന്നു. ലിമായിലെ വിശുദ്ധ റോസിന്റെ അടുത്ത സുഹൃത്തായിരിന്ന ഈ വിശുദ്ധന് 1639 നവംബര് 3ന് നിത്യസമ്മാനത്തിനായി വിളിക്കപ്പെട്ടു. 1962 മെയ് 6ന് അദ്ദേഹത്തെ വിശുദ്ധനായി പ്രഖ്യാപിച്ചു.
Today the Church celebrates the memorial of Saint Martin de Porres, who lived immersed in humility, prayer, fasting, and devotion to God. The saint was born in 1579 in Peru, the son of a Spanish nobleman and a woman of African descent from Panama. Martin inherited his mother’s dark complexion and features. Because of this, his noble father gradually drove him away from the household.
As a young man, Martin worked as an assistant to a surgeon-barber. Not long after, he joined the Dominican Order as a lay brother and was appointed caretaker of a Dominican infirmary in Lima. Very soon he became known for serving the sick of the city and the enslaved people brought from Africa to Peru. Because of this compassionate care, he is often depicted holding animals in his hands. He was granted many extraordinary spiritual gifts.
Even though he had no formal education or advanced theological training, many scholars and learned religious figures of his time would often come to him seeking clarity on matters of faith. Saint Rose of Lima and Blessed John Macías were among his close friends. Many people refer to him as an unofficial patron of social justice. Throughout his life, Martin served in the Dominican infirmary as a barber, gardener, and chief nurse.
Martin longed deeply to die as a martyr while working in a foreign mission. Since this desire could not be fulfilled, he instead offered himself entirely to God through continual penance and acts of self-sacrifice. In return, God granted him extraordinary gifts, such as the ability to stand suspended in air and to appear in different places at the same time. His love was visible to all. He showed compassion not only to people, but also to animals—even insects.
He even kept a small shelter for dogs and cats at his sister’s house. A fountain of spiritual wisdom, Martin was also well-regarded among Church leaders and theologians, who sought him for advice on complex matters of faith. Close friend of Saint Rose of Lima, this saint was called to his eternal reward on November 3, 1639. On May 6, 1962, he was formally canonized a saint.
