*”When we profess in our Creed, “We believe in the communion of saints,” it leads us into a profound truth of faith: the Church is the fellowship of all believers—both those living on earth and those who have died and now dwell in heaven.
The Roman Martyrology expresses it this way:
“On the day of All Souls, we commemorate the faithful departed who have separated from us. Our Mother, the Holy Church, praises with all honor those who have already entered heavenly joy and, through her intercession, earnestly prays to Christ, her God and Bridegroom, that the souls in purgatory may soon be made worthy to inherit the heavenly city.”*
On this day, indulgences may be obtained for the souls in purgatory. The faithful may visit the cemetery and pray for the departed to receive a plenary indulgence for them. From November 1 to November 8, a plenary indulgence can be obtained; on other days of the year, a partial indulgence may be gained. The Church grants plenary indulgences exclusively for the souls in purgatory.
The faithful should visit the graves on November 2 (and also on the Sundays before and after November 2, as well as on All Saints’ Day) and devoutly pray the Our Father and the Creed.
To obtain a plenary indulgence, three conditions must be fulfilled:
-
Confession according to liturgical norms
-
Reception of Holy Communion
-
Prayer for the intentions of the Holy Father
These three conditions may be completed on different days, either before or after the cemetery visit. However, it is best to pray for the Holy Father’s intentions and receive Holy Communion on the same day as the cemetery visit. The recommended prayers are the Our Father and the Hail Mary.
Yesterday, the Church rejoiced for those who have already reached the heavenly home. Today, she prays for those suffering in purgatory, waiting to join the saints.
Nowhere in the Church’s liturgy is the mysterious unity of the Church Triumphant (Heaven), the Church Militant (Earth), and the Church Suffering (Purgatory) expressed so clearly. In no other place is the double duty of charity and justice—rooted in our union with the Body of Christ—so beautifully fulfilled.
The merits, goodness, and intercessory prayers of the saints help all. The Church joins with them offering the Holy Mass, indulgence prayers, works of charity, and the sacrifices of her children for the souls in purgatory.
Through the Holy Mass, the suffering of Calvary continues on our altars, and by fulfilling works of mercy for the dead, the divine command to help the poor is fulfilled. The practice of offering Mass for the dead dates back to the fifth century.
It was St. Odilo, the fourth Abbot of Cluny, who introduced the practice of observing a special day of remembrance for the faithful departed. He established this observance as November 2, the day following All Saints’ Day. This custom gradually spread to all Christian lands.
In the Mass, the priest remembers the dead each day, praying that God may grant them a place of light, peace, and joy. Thus, no Mass is offered in the Church without prayer for the faithful departed.
No soul in purgatory is left without the spiritual assistance of the Church. With a mother’s care, she gathers them all through her intercession. Through a special decree of Pope Benedict XV, all priests today may offer three Masses for the souls in purgatory.
There is no doubt that the Holy Mass and our acts of sacrifice offered for them bring liberation to many souls.”*
