As the Mother of God’s children, the Blessed Virgin Mary has, for centuries, come to the aid of Christians and answered the prayers of her children. Devotion to the Blessed Mother, who comes to the aid of individuals, families, cities, nations, and entire countries, has increased among all believers. In 1241, to combat the Albigensian heresy that was sweeping across southern France, the Blessed Mother gave the weapon of the Rosary to Saint Dominic. Through the praying of the Rosary, the Mother assured Christians around the world that she would come to their aid and that this was in accordance with the will of God.
Juan Diego was a 51-year-old farmer. In 1531, in Mexico, the Mother appeared to Juan Diego. It is said that following this apparition, nearly 10 million people embraced the Catholic faith. At that time, there was a prevailing evil custom of offering children as sacrifices. With the appearance of the Blessed Mother, this practice came to an end.
On October 7, 1571, a great war broke out in Europe. Historical records indicate that as a result of Catholics throughout Europe praying the Rosary, the Christians were completely delivered. For this reason, this day was accepted as the feast day of the Most Holy Rosary. In 1573, Pope Pius V established this feast as an expression of gratitude for the decisive victory the Christians won over the Muslims.
Towards the end of the seventeenth century, around 200,000 Ottoman Turks laid siege to the capital city of Vienna. Leopold I, the Emperor of Austria, sought refuge in the shrine of the Mother in Passau for the protection of Christians. Subsequently, Pope Innocent XI united all Christians against the assault of the Mohammedans. On September 8, the Nativity of the Blessed Mother, plans for the war were devised. On September 12, the feast of the Holy Name of Mary, Vienna was completely liberated through the intercession of the Mother.
In 1809, Napoleon’s army entered the Vatican and captured Pope Pius VII. He was bound in chains and taken to Grenoble, and later to Fontainebleau. His imprisonment lasted for about five years. From his prison cell, the Pope called upon Christians throughout the world to pray to the Blessed Mother for help.
Once again, Europe became a battleground for a spiritual war. The faithful began the battle against merciless military power with the Rosary. Not long after, Napoleon was deposed from power, and the Pope was released from prison. For centuries, our Holy Virgin has continued to appear in hundreds of places around the world, offering her maternal assistance.
Among the places where the Blessed Mother appeared, Lourdes and Fatima are especially renowned. Day by day, the Blessed Mother continues to send her help from Heaven to Earth. She has also warned her children that prayer and repentance are the path to peace. One must not forget that in every place where the Blessed Mother has appeared, she has reminded her children to pray the Rosary every day.
