Devotion to Saints Nereus and Achilleus has been evident since the 4th century. These saints were soldiers and servants of Saint Flavia Domitilla, who is commemorated on May 7. In obedience to Emperor Domitian’s orders, they were exiled along with the royal maiden Flavia to the island of Ponza. There, under the command of Emperor Trajan, they were executed. Their bodies were buried in the cemetery of Saint Domitilla. When the cemetery was excavated in 1896, their burial chamber was found inside a church built by Pope Siricius in 490.
About 200 years after their martyrdom, Pope Gregory the Great said in a sermon: “We are gathered beside those who despised, trampled upon, and rejected a world that promises peace, wealth, and health.”
An inscription placed by Pope Damasus on their tomb invites us to reflect: “Nereus and Achilleus, soldiers, obeyed the cruel orders of a tyrant out of fear. But suddenly, the tyrant’s heart changed. They threw away their shields, armor, and bloodstained garments, fled the wicked leader’s camp, and rejoiced in professing their faith in Christ.”
