In the year 320, these forty martyrs lived in Sebaste, Armenia. When asked by their commanders to sacrifice to the idols, they refused to renounce the faith they had embraced through Mammodis. In response to the temptations they were offered, they said: “We are Christians.” Unable to sway them with threats or temptations, they were imprisoned for a few days, then chained and led to the execution ground.
It was during a harsh winter. The forty saints were stripped naked and made to lie in a freezing cold pool of water, which was frozen over. They were left there to freeze to death. Despite knowing that their deaths were near, the martyrs did not despair. Rather, they rejoiced at the thought that they were dying for Jesus. They said: “The cold of this water, which we are sinking into, is indeed a great difficulty, but through this path, we will be able to go to heaven. This suffering will last for only a short time, but the glory we will receive will be eternal. This cruel night will grant us everlasting joy. Lord, we are forty and we are entering battle; grant us forty crowns!”
If anyone was tempted to change their mind and was willing to abandon Christ, there was a bowl of warm water nearby. One of them, unable to bear the cold, gave up his faith and went to immerse himself in the warm water. However, due to the sudden change in temperature, he lost both his mortal and eternal life and died. Seeing this, the other martyrs, still alive, decided to hold firmly to their faith.
At that moment, a brilliant light covered the entire place, and the soldiers guarding the prisoners were unable to see anything due to the intense light. One soldier, struggling to open his eyes, saw forty angels descending from heaven, carrying crowns in their hands. The angels placed the crowns on the heads of the forty martyrs.
However, when the fortieth angel hesitated, not knowing who to place the crown on, the soldier, witnessing this miraculous sight, believed in Christ and loudly declared, “That crown is for me!” He cast off his clothes and joined the martyrs. The soldier then went to the place where the faithful had died and lay down next to them, declaring, “I am a Christian.” Thus, the number of forty was completed.
Even as their limbs froze and they were on the brink of death, they did not renounce their faith, and one by one, they succumbed to death.
Among the forty soldiers, there was a young man named Meliton, who held out the longest. When the authorities came to remove the corpses, they found that he was still breathing. Out of pity, they hoped that he would eventually abandon his faith, and they decided to save him. However, his mother, who was present, could not bear the thought of her son leaving the group of martyrs. She pleaded with him to stay firm in his faith. The soldiers then dragged him along with the other bodies to the cart.
He had to show a sign to return to life. However, he did not respond. Therefore, his body, along with the others, was thrown into the fire, and their bones were later cast into the river. They floated above the water, and the faithful collected and preserved them.
