Saint Albinus was born into an ancient family in France. From his very childhood, he preserved an extraordinary devotion to God. While still a young man, against the wishes of his parents, he entered the Abbey of Tincillant. Albinus willingly embraced all the hardships of monastic life and lived a life of humility without a single complaint. “To live for Jesus” was the desire that burned constantly within his heart. His total dedication to prayer and his exemplary way of life earned him the respect of the other monks. When he was only thirty-five years old, Saint Albinus was appointed Abbot of the Abbey of Tincillant. Under his wise governance, the monastery flourished greatly, and the monks were spiritually nourished by the saint’s deep holiness.
After spending twenty-five years as an abbot, Saint Albinus was appointed Bishop of Angers in 529. Although rulers frequently sought his counsel, he never abandoned his humility. As a bishop, Albinus worked tirelessly for the welfare of God’s people, offering them sound guidance and pastoral care.
With the support of King Childebert, the saint convened two councils at Orléans, during which he firmly opposed the illicit marriages that were prevalent in families at that time. During this period, his diocese was attacked by pagan invaders, and many citizens were taken into slavery. In response, Saint Albinus paid ransoms to free many captives and gave generous assistance to the poor and the sick.
Numerous miracles are attributed to Saint Albinus. According to one tradition, when he was unable to secure the release of certain prisoners who were undergoing severe and cruel torture, the saint stood before the prison and prayed. Immediately, a terrifying landslide occurred, destroying the prison and enabling all the prisoners to escape.
Those prisoners later became Christians and went on to live exemplary lives before many people. Over Saint Albinus’s tomb in Angers, a monastery was built in his honor, known as the Abbey of Saint Albinus, which later became a world-famous pilgrimage center.
