This commemoration is in honor of the countless unnamed followers of Christ who were brutally killed—burned alive—in Rome under the rule of the Roman Emperor Nero, who behaved like a man afflicted with madness. The pagan historian Tacitus and Saint Clement describe a horrific night in Rome. Christians were clothed in animal skins, hunted and savagely attacked in the royal gardens of Rome. Some were even turned into living torches to light the paths for Nero’s chariots. Between A.D. 64 and 314, being a Christian was synonymous with being a victim of oppression.
Within twelve or more years after the death of Jesus, there were already numerous Christians in Rome. When Saint Paul wrote his famous letter around A.D. 57–58, he had not yet visited them. It is believed that due to conflicts between Jews and Jewish Christians, Emperor Claudius expelled them from Rome around A.D. 49–50. The historian Suetonius recorded that Christians were the cause of this expulsion. Possibly, after Claudius’ death in A.D. 54, many of them returned. In his letter, Saint Paul addresses a church consisting of both Jews and Gentiles.
In July A.D. 64, about half of the city of Rome was destroyed in a massive fire. It was widely rumored that Emperor Nero, who wished to expand his palace, was responsible for the fire. However, Nero placed the blame on the Christians. Consequently, a large number of Christians were burned alive, as recorded by the historian Tacitus. It is believed that Saint Peter and Saint Paul were among those victims. Later, due to the threat of a military uprising and having been sentenced to death by the Senate, Emperor Nero committed suicide in A.D. 68 at the age of 31.
Wherever the Gospel of Jesus spread, his followers had to face opposition. Moreover, many of those who followed Jesus embraced death as part of sharing in his sufferings. But no human power can suppress the spiritual freedom that has been revealed to the world. The blood of the martyrs has always been, and will continue to be, the seed of growth for Christianity.
