Saint Peter

The real name of Peter was Shimeon. It was Jesus who gave him the name Cephas, or Peter. This change of name reveals both the saint’s position as the leader of the apostles and the unique qualities of his character. Peter was born in Bethsaida, located on the shore of the Sea of Galilee. Like his younger brother Andrew, Peter lived as a fisherman. It is said that when Jesus, Peter’s master, came to preach in those regions, He stayed at Peter’s house. Thus, Peter’s home became the site of many miracles. Along with his brothers John and Andrew, Peter became one of the first disciples of Jesus (John 1:40–50).

After the miraculous catch of fish on the Sea of Galilee, Peter accepted the divine calling and abandoned his wife, family, and occupation to take up the leadership of the twelve disciples. From then on, Peter consistently appeared as the official spokesman of the apostolic community and as the most beloved disciple, always seen near Jesus. His emotional fervor and enthusiasm often led him to speak and act impulsively. Cutting off the ear of the high priest’s servant and denying Jesus during His Passion are prime examples of this.

On the day of the Ascension, Saint Peter assumed leadership of the disciples and faithfully carried out the duties and devotional acts entrusted to him by Jesus. The Holy Scriptures mention his presence at the Council of Jerusalem (Acts 15:1) and his journey to Antioch (Galatians 2:11). Whatever the case, it is certain that Peter served as an apostle in Rome.

He was the first bishop of that city and was imprisoned and martyred there in 67 A.D. According to tradition, Peter was also the first bishop of Antioch. Two writings, which may be called the first Christian encyclopedias, are attributed to the saint. The most important church in the Christian world stands where the saint is believed to have been buried. Around the dome of that basilica are inscribed the words: “Tu es Petrus, et super hanc petram aedificabo ecclesiam meam” (“You are Peter, and upon this rock I will build my Church, and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it. I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven”).

Saint Paul

Before his conversion to Christianity, Paul was known as Saul. He was born in Tarsus, a Roman province in Cilicia, about three or four years after the coming of Christ. His parents were Jews of the tribe of Benjamin, and they raised him according to the strict religious nationalism of the Pharisees. They also enjoyed the special status of Roman citizenship.

As a young man, Paul traveled to Jerusalem to gain expertise in the law, where he studied under the renowned teacher Gamaliel. During Jesus’ public ministry, Paul was not in Jerusalem and never encountered Jesus during His lifetime. When Paul returned to the Holy City, he encountered the growing Christian community and soon became a fierce opponent of the Christians. He was one of the first to cast stones at Stephen when he criticized Jewish law and the temple. Paul’s intense and fearful personality soon led him to actively persecute Christians.

On his way to Damascus to persecute Jesus’ disciples, Paul experienced a divine intervention that led to his conversion. After receiving baptism, he began to proclaim the Gospel in small ways and then withdrew to the Arabian desert (c. 34–37 A.D.) to prepare for his future ministry. During this time of meditation, he received many revelations, and Jesus appeared to him directly.

When he returned to Damascus and began preaching the Gospel, the Jews plotted to kill him, forcing him to flee. He then traveled to Jerusalem to meet Peter. Barnabas was the one who introduced Paul to the Christian community. However, due to opposition from the Jews, Paul was secretly sent away from there. He spent the next several years (38–42 A.D.) in Tarsus until Barnabas brought him to the newly formed Christian community in Antioch. There, the two worked together for about a year in the service of Jesus. Paul then made another trip to Jerusalem with financial aid for the community suffering due to famine.

Paul’s first major missionary journey (45–48 A.D.) began after his return. Together with Barnabas, he spread the Gospel in Cyprus and Asia Minor (Acts 13–14). When Paul returned to Jerusalem in A.D. 50, the famous Council of Jerusalem took place. Encouraged by the decisions of that council, Paul began his second missionary journey (51–53 A.D.). He traveled through Asia Minor, crossed into Europe, and preached the Gospel in places such as Philippi, Thessalonica, Berea, Athens, Greece, and Corinth, establishing numerous churches.

Paul spent about two years in Corinth building a rapidly growing and important Christian community. In 54 A.D., he returned to Jerusalem for the fourth time. During his third missionary journey (54–58 A.D.), he worked very successfully in Ephesus for nearly three years.

On the day of Pentecost in 58 A.D., after visiting his communities in Europe, Paul returned to Jerusalem for the fifth time. There, the Jews accused him of blaspheming their laws and had him arrested. After being imprisoned in Caesarea for two years, he appealed to Caesar and was sent to Rome. However, due to a shipwreck in Malta, he arrived in Rome only in the spring of 61 A.D.

He was imprisoned there for two years before being released. Paul spent the final years of his life on further missionary journeys, possibly even reaching Spain. During this time, he revisited the churches he had established earlier. In 66 A.D., he returned to Rome, where he was arrested and imprisoned once more. A year later, he was beheaded.

The fourteen letters written by Paul are invaluable documents, offering profound insight into the heart of a great soul.
