June 28:

Saint Irenaeus, believed to have been a native of Asia Minor, was born around the year 120. His parents, who were devout Christians, entrusted him during his youth to the care of Saint Polycarp, the bishop of Smyrna. It was in this holy school that Saint Irenaeus acquired the profound theological knowledge that would later make him a precious ornament of the Church and a terror to its enemies.

Saint Polycarp recognized his disciple’s brilliance and, through his teachings and example, instilled in him a deep reverence for God. The beloved disciple diligently reaped all the fruits promised by his eminent master.

The disciple held his teacher in the highest regard, keenly observing all of Polycarp’s actions and virtues and striving to reflect them in his own life. Irenaeus absorbed every instruction of his master with great reverence and imprinted them deeply in his heart. In order to confront the heresies of his time, he familiarized himself with the hollow philosophies of foreign thinkers, gaining the ability to trace the roots of all their errors.

Through his writings, Saint Irenaeus had connections with other great figures such as Tertullian, Theodoret, and Saint Epiphanius. It was Saint Epiphanius who referred to Irenaeus as “the flaming torch of truth that shone in the darkness of those times.”

After spending a few years countering the errors of Eastern philosophers and thinkers, Saint Polycarp decided to send Irenaeus to Gaul. Numerous heretics from Asia Minor had migrated to Gaul with the aim of eradicating the newly-rooted Christian faith. Irenaeus journeyed to Lyons with about forty other Christians to assist Saint Pothinus, the bishop of Lyons.

By then, Saint Pothinus was already aged, and the new Christians in his community did not always have the discernment to separate truth from misleading philosophies. The old bishop received Irenaeus and his companions with great love and soon ordained him.

Working as the right hand of the aged bishop, Irenaeus faced nearly a hundred situations where he could have become a martyr due to his zeal. However, God preserved that crown for him for more than twenty-five years. After Saint Pothinus glorified God by dying a martyr in 177, Saint Irenaeus was consecrated as the second bishop of Lyons. The persecutors believed that Christianity had been wiped out from Lyons and thus paused their oppression for a time.

This great theologian of the Church authored many important works. His most significant writings are those which explain the faith while powerfully countering heresies. Through his teachings, Saint Irenaeus converted nearly the entire region to Christianity within a short time.

The Christians of Lyons, by their integrity, by abandoning greed, and by serving as examples in their poverty, holiness, and patience, stood firm against the many challenges to their faith. Irenaeus continued to imitate his teacher, Saint Polycarp, who had been a disciple of the Apostle John. Under his leadership, the Church in Lyons flourished greatly.

After serving God for nearly eighty years, Saint Irenaeus was finally crowned with martyrdom, along with many others, in the year 202 under the reign of Emperor Septimius Severus. In the tenth year of Severus’s reign, a royal edict for persecution reached Lyons.

The pagans viewed the festival held in honor of this occasion as an opportunity to suppress Christians who refused to participate in its immoral rituals and lustful celebrations. Murderers, armed with axes, stones, and swords, roamed the city and turned it into a pool of blood. Thousands of Christians, along with their bishop, received the supreme honor of martyrdom—a glory that only God can bestow upon His faithful servants.
