Saint Cyril was the Patriarch of Alexandria, one of the most important sees of the Eastern Church. He was a great defender of the faith who stood firmly against the heretical teachings of Nestorius, who denied the unified personhood of Christ. At the Council of Ephesus in 431, Saint Cyril presided as the representative of the Pope. Under his guidance, the Church clarified the doctrines that Jesus Christ, the Son of God, is both fully divine and fully human, and that the Virgin Mary, His mother, is truly the Mother of God. Saint Cyril passed away in the year 444. The Church honors him as one of the greatest theological scholars of all time. His commentary on the Gospel of Saint John is considered one of the most valuable documents we possess.
Saint Cyril is regarded as one of the great Greek Fathers of the Church. He was both a champion and a hero sent by God to combat Nestorianism, which denied the unity of Christ. If this heresy had prevailed, it would not have been possible to call the Blessed Virgin Mary the Mother of God.
Except for Saint Athanasius and Saint Augustine, no other defender of orthodoxy can be considered equal to Saint Cyril in Church history. His most remarkable achievement was his efficient leadership of the Council of Ephesus in 431.
He was the very soul of that Council. Pope Celestine had appointed him as his representative at that gathering. Two major doctrines were clarified at this Council: the doctrine that there is only one person in Jesus, and the doctrine that Mary rightfully deserves to be called the ‘Mother of God’ (Theotokos). It is the successful affirmation of the second doctrine that makes Saint Cyril especially worthy of veneration.
Because of the depth and clarity of his writings, the Greek Church referred to him as “the Seal of the Fathers.” After serving as Bishop of Alexandria for 32 years, he died in 444. The Basilica of Saint Mary Major stands as the most honorable memorial to the reverence shown to the Blessed Virgin at the Council of Ephesus. The entrance to this holy place is adorned with mosaics depicting significant events from the lives of Jesus and Mary.
