Saints John and Paul were officials in the army of the heretical Julian. Although they share their names with the Apostles Saint John and Saint Paul, they have no relation to them. It is believed that their martyrdom occurred around the year 362 under the command of Apronianus, a Roman official and fierce enemy of Christians at the time.
These two saints glorified God through a twofold victory: by renouncing the praise and honor of this world and by triumphing over threats and suffering. They witnessed many evil people continuing in their unbelief. However, the saints did not tremble before the example of their sin. They believed that trying to escape sin through material advancements would lead only to the greatest form of punishment.
Through their heroic patience, invincible virtue, and unwavering faithfulness, their torments became a wondrous spectacle before God. Seated on the throne of His glory, God looked upon them, extended His hands to strengthen them, and in the joyful moment of their triumph, placed the immortal crown upon their heads. These martyrs, by enduring momentary afflictions, gathered for themselves an immeasurable and eternal glory that would never fade.
According to the list published by Father Fronto, it is believed that a church bearing the names of these saints existed near the old basilica of Saints Peter and Paul in Rome. Devotion to these saints was evident in the liturgical practices of Saint Gelasius and the great Saint Gregory; similarly, their veneration can be seen in ancient Gallican liturgical customs.
After the fifth century, the names of these saints became increasingly renowned in the Church. These saints remind us that every action in our lives should stem from deep inspiration, performed with our entire strength, and wholly dedicated to divine service. We must always remember that we are indebted to God for our present condition. If negligence and ingratitude cause failures in our mission and devotion, we must understand that the blood shed by these saints becomes a reproach to our own lack of zeal.
