തന്റെ ദൗത്യത്തിന്റെ അവസാന തയ്യാറെടുപ്പുകള് നടത്തുമ്പോള് അവന് ഒരുപക്ഷേ 32 വയസ്സായിരുന്നു പ്രായം. പുരാതന കാലത്തെ ദിവ്യരായിട്ടുള്ളവര് ചെയ്യുന്നത് പോലെ വിശുദ്ധ സ്നാപക യോഹന്നാനും പ്രാര്ത്ഥിക്കുവാനും, ഉപവസിക്കുവാനുമായി ജോര്ദാന് അപ്പുറമുള്ള പരുക്കന് പാറകള് നിറഞ്ഞ മരുഭൂമിയിലേക്ക് പിന്വാങ്ങി. നമുക്കറിയാവുന്നത് പോലെ വെട്ടുകിളികളും, തേനും മാത്രമായിരുന്നു വിശുദ്ധന്റെ ഭക്ഷണം. ഒട്ടകത്തിന്റെ രോമം കൊണ്ടുള്ള ഒരു പരുക്കന് കുപ്പായമായിരുന്നു വിശുദ്ധന് ധരിച്ചിരുന്നത്. യൂദയായുടെ ഗ്രാമപ്രദേശങ്ങളില് പ്രഘോഷണത്തിനായി വരുമ്പോള് വളരെയേറെ മെലിഞ്ഞുണങ്ങി വികൃതമായ രൂപത്തിലായിരുന്നു അവന്. എന്നാല് അവന്റെ കണ്ണുകള് ആവേശത്താല് തിളങ്ങുകയും, ശിക്ഷാവിധിയേ കുറിച്ചുള്ള സ്വരം ശക്തമായ മുന്നറിയിപ്പുമായിരുന്നു. ബാഹ്യരൂപത്തെ കണക്കിലെടുക്കാതെ പ്രവാചകന്മാരെ സ്വീകരിക്കുന്ന ശീലമുള്ളവരായിരുന്നു യഹൂദന്മാര്. അതിനാല് അവര് പെട്ടെന്ന് തന്നെ യോഹന്നാനേയും സ്വീകരിച്ചു;
Usually, the Church celebrates the feast day of a saint on the day of their death. However, the feasts of the Blessed Virgin Mary and St. John the Baptist are exceptions to this tradition. While other saints, though specially chosen by God, were born with original sin, the Blessed Virgin was conceived without the stain of original sin. St. John the Baptist, on the other hand, was cleansed from original sin while still in his mother’s womb. This is the theological reason for today’s celebration.
St. Augustine speaks of this feast as follows:
“Other than the most reverent celebration of the birth of our Savior, the Church does not celebrate the birthday of any other individual except that of St. John the Baptist (at that time, the traditions of celebrating the Immaculate Conception and the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin had not yet begun). For other saints, the Church observes their memorial feast on the day of their earthly death, the day they ended their journey in this world and attained glorious victory, entering eternal and unceasing joy.”
“As far as others are concerned, their feast is observed on the day of their earthly departure, the day they completed their earthly service. But in the case of John the Baptist, we honor the day he began his mortal life. That day is considered sacred. The reason is undoubtedly that the Lord desired to make His coming known to the people through John the Baptist. Otherwise, if the Lord suddenly appeared one day, the people would fail to recognize Him. John represented the Old Covenant and the Law. Even though the coming of the Savior was revealed in the Old Testament, John was born before the Savior to prepare His way.”
In one sense, today’s feast is a forerunner to Christmas. In a year, we celebrate two great mysteries: the Incarnation of Christ and the Redemption of humanity. Of these, the mystery of Redemption holds the greatest significance. The Incarnation of Christ touches the human heart directly. From the Sunday nine weeks before Easter until Pentecost, the Church devotes the entire Easter season to recalling the Redemption.
The key reality in Christmas is that God became man. Apart from this, in the rest of the liturgical year, there are occasional celebrations that reflect this truth. One such celebration is the feast of the Blessed Virgin, especially the Annunciation (March 25). Another is today’s feast of St. John the Baptist. In a real sense, today’s feast too is a remembrance of the Incarnation.
Christmas is celebrated on December 25, in winter, while the feast of the one who came to prepare the way for Christ is celebrated six months earlier. Christmas is a celebration of ‘light,’ and it remains so even today. St. John the Baptist was a lamp burning and giving light. As Christians, we too must be the light of the world.
From the slightly differing accounts of Matthew, Mark, Luke, and the Gospel of John, we learn about the role of John the Baptist, who came to prepare the way for Jesus. According to Luke, John was born in a town in Judea six months before the birth of Jesus. The New Testament does not mention his early life in detail. However, we know that his devout parents raised him with great care, aware of the divine mission entrusted to him. They also instilled in him the consciousness of this divine call.
When he began to prepare for his mission, John was likely around 32 years old. Like the ancient prophets, John withdrew to the rugged desert beyond the Jordan to pray and fast. As we know, his food was locusts and wild honey. His clothing was a rough garment made of camel’s hair. When he came to the villages of Judea to proclaim his message, he was a lean and wild-looking figure. Yet his eyes sparkled with passion, and his voice was a powerful call to repentance. The Jews were accustomed to accepting prophets regardless of their external appearance, so they readily received John.
It was a troubled time, and people longed for hope. The power that radiated from John caused many to believe that he was the long-awaited Messiah. But John corrected this misunderstanding by proclaiming that he had only come to prepare the way for the Savior and was not even worthy to untie the strap of His sandals. Even after Jesus began His public ministry, John continued his preaching and baptizing for a few more months. He constantly emphasized that he was only a forerunner.
John’s fame spread throughout Jerusalem. Even the chief priests came to see and hear him, but he never gave up his humility. “Repent, for the Kingdom of Heaven is at hand” was his repeated message. In response to the evils of the time, John urged a personal holiness. He strongly promoted the act of ‘baptism of repentance,’ symbolizing heartfelt repentance and spiritual purity in preparation for Christ. Because of this, the people began calling him “the Baptist.”
The Scriptures mention the day when Jesus received baptism from John along with others. John recognized Jesus as the coming Savior and initially protested, saying he was not worthy. But since he had to obey Jesus, John baptized Him. Jesus, though sinless, wished to be baptized to reveal His unity with mankind.
After receiving baptism and rising from the waters of the Jordan, the heavens opened, the Holy Spirit descended in the form of a dove, and a voice from heaven declared: “This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased” (Mark 1:11).
John’s life was approaching its tragic end. In the fifteenth year of the reign of Roman Emperor Tiberius Caesar, Herod Antipas governed the regions of Galilee and Perea, east of the Jordan.
During his preaching, John severely criticized Herod for his unlawful conduct—taking Herodias, his half-brother Philip’s wife, as his own. He rebuked Herod directly for violating Jewish law. Herodias, a cruel woman and Herod’s niece, became enraged. Though Herod respected John and often listened to his advice, he could not tolerate the criticism of his personal life. With the deceit and cunning of Herodias fueling his anger, Herod finally imprisoned John in the fortress of Machaerus near the Dead Sea.
When Jesus heard about John’s imprisonment and that some of John’s disciples had visited Him, He said about John:
“What did you go out to see? A prophet? Yes, I tell you, and more than a prophet. This is the one about whom it is written: ‘Behold, I send my messenger ahead of you, who will prepare your way before you.’ Truly I tell you, among those born of women, there has not risen anyone greater than John the Baptist” (Matthew 9:10–12).
Even in prison, John did not fall silent, and Herodias did not stop her attempts to destroy him. Some of John’s disciples also created further tension. Finally, Herodias found an opportunity to eliminate him. On Herod’s birthday, he gave a banquet for the prominent men of the region. Matthew (chapter 14), Mark (chapter 6), and Luke (chapter 9) give a similar account of the events of that day.
At the feast, Salome, the 14-year-old daughter of Herodias by her former husband, danced before Herod and his guests, delighting them with her beauty. Herod, pleased, promised her any gift she asked for—even up to half his kingdom.
Influenced by her wicked mother, Salome requested the head of John the Baptist on a platter. This terrifying request shocked and disturbed Herod. Though he knew it was evil, he could not go back on his word in front of his guests. So he sent a soldier to the prison, who beheaded John and brought back his head on a platter. The cruel young girl received the gruesome gift without fear and presented it to her mother. Thus, the mission of St. John the Baptist came to a tragic end. When Jesus’ disciples heard of it, they came, took his body, and gave it a proper burial. Jesus then went with some of His disciples into the wilderness to mourn John’s death.
The Jewish historian Josephus also bore witness to John’s sanctity by writing:
“Indeed, he was a man full of all virtues, who taught the Jews to practice justice toward men and piety toward God, and to live lives of righteousness. He instructed them that, if they repented of their sins, they would become acceptable to God. Along with that, he taught that, just as the body is cleansed, so must the soul be purified.”
For this reason, Christians and Jews alike unite in their reverence and love for this holy man, who remains a matchless model of humility and courage.
