Saint Joseph Cafasso was born in 1811 to devout parents in Castelnuovo. From an early age, he showed no interest in the amusements typical of children his age. Instead, he found joy in attending Holy Mass and immersing himself in other devotional practices. His desire was to be always close to God. By the age of six, he was already being called a saint. Even during his school years and time as a seminary student, his innocence, courage, humility, obedience to rules, and devotion to prayer earned him the respect and admiration of others. Historians often referred to him as another Aloysius Gonzaga.
Not long after receiving Holy Orders, the renowned priest Aloysius Guala founded a seminary adjacent to the Church of St. Francis of Assisi in Turin. Its purpose was to guide young priests in their divine vocations and prepare them to counter the errors of Jansenism, a heretical movement. Joseph was appointed a teacher there and, after the founder’s death, was designated as his successor.
As the head of the seminary, Joseph quickly completed the demanding missions begun by Father Guala. He uprooted the destructive doctrines of Jansenism and other Enlightenment thinkers, and revived the spiritual teachings of Saint Francis de Sales and Saint Alphonsus Liguori, which guided the faithful toward Christian perfection.
Throughout his priesthood, Saint Joseph Cafasso fulfilled every responsibility entrusted to him with the devotion and sincerity of one personally commissioned by the Heavenly Father. He did all he could to promote devotion to the Holy Mass and regularly urged the faithful not to miss it.
From his youth, Saint Joseph held a special devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary. He encouraged the faithful to love the Holy Mother with a childlike reverence and affection. His enthusiasm inspired altar servers, and he encouraged them to lead others to a transformation of heart for the Lord.
Saint Joseph Cafasso also placed great importance on spiritual matters. His heart was especially moved by the plight of orphans, the poor, the sick, and prisoners. He never neglected a single difficult task. Through his advice and support, he inspired his beloved disciple, Don Bosco, to found the Society of Saint Francis, later known as the Salesian Order.
He offered every possible aid to the unfortunate individuals condemned to death, providing them comfort and courage. His love overcame their resistance and drew them closer to God. Saint Joseph even accompanied them to their places of execution, viewing this temporal death as a passage into eternal life.
After performing such great deeds and earning the admiration of all, Saint Joseph Cafasso passed away in the Lord on June 23, 1860, at the age of 49, after having prepared himself with the Sacraments of the Church. In recognition of his virtues and the miracles attributed to his intercession, Pope Pius XI beatified him in 1925. Later, in 1947, Pope Pius XII canonized Joseph Cafasso as a saint.
