Saint Thomas More

Saint Thomas More was born in London, England. He served as the Chancellor under King Henry VIII. As a public servant, his life was an extraordinary combination of human awareness and Christian wisdom. His conviction that even a beloved ruler had no authority over the Holy Church of Jesus cost him his own life. A renowned lawyer, a gentleman, and the father of four children, Saint Thomas was the Chancellor of England. Possessing profound spirituality, he opposed King Henry’s decision to divorce Catherine of Aragon and marry Anne Boleyn. Moreover, he did not approve of the King’s attempt to sever ties with Rome and declare himself the supreme head of the Church in England.

Saint Thomas was tried in the Tower of London for treason. During the trial, he declared that he had the support of all Christian councils throughout the world for his actions guided by his conscience. As a prominent diplomat and advisor, Saint Thomas understood that true loyalty to a king did not mean blindly accepting all his decisions, and he was not willing to compromise his moral values to please the monarch.

Even though King Henry VIII clearly understood this, he tried in vain to bring Thomas More to his side, knowing well the value of his approval and that he was a man of unquestionable integrity. However, when Saint Thomas resigned from his position as Chancellor without accepting the two most critical conditions, the King had no choice but to eliminate him.

On July 6, 1535, Saint Thomas More was beheaded on Tower Hill in London for refusing to approve of King Henry VIII’s divorce, remarriage, and rejection of the Pope’s authority in favor of assuming supremacy over the Church in England. Four hundred years later, in 1935, Saint Thomas More was canonized. In the year 2000, Pope John Paul II declared Saint Thomas More the patron saint of political leaders.

Saint John Fisher

Saint John Fisher studied theology at the University of Cambridge in England and later became the Bishop of Rochester. His friend, Saint Thomas More, wrote about him saying, “When wisdom, learning, and virtue are combined, I consider no one comparable to him.” Saint John Fisher and his friend Saint Thomas More gave their lives for the unity of the Church and the sanctity of the marriage bond.

Saint John Fisher had associations with Erasmus, Thomas More, and other Renaissance figures. Therefore, unlike some other saints, the outward simplicity seen in their lives is not observed in his. A man of profound learning, he engaged in many discussions with the intellectuals and political leaders of his time. Interested in the culture of the era, he eventually became the Chancellor of Cambridge University.

He was consecrated as bishop at the age of 35. One of his main goals was to improve the quality of preaching the Gospel in England. Saint John Fisher was himself a great preacher and writer. His Penitential Psalms were reprinted seven times before his death. With the rise of Lutheranism, he became caught in the whirlpool of theological controversies. His eight writings against heresy earned him a leadership position among the theologians of Europe.

In 1521, the Church authorities asked Saint John Fisher to investigate the confusion surrounding King Henry VIII’s marriage. He declared that the King’s marriage to Catherine was valid and rejected the King’s claim of supremacy over the Church in England. These positions led to the King’s displeasure with him. To remove him, the King falsely accused him of failing to report the revelations of Elizabeth Barton, the so-called “Maid of Kent.”

Despite his poor health, he was summoned to take an oath at the new appointment ceremony. However, since the purpose of the oath was to validate Henry’s divorce and to acknowledge him as the supreme head of the Church in England, Saint John Fisher and Saint Thomas More refused to take the oath. Consequently, they were sent to the Tower of London. There, Saint John Fisher remained imprisoned without trial for about 14 months. Eventually, he was sentenced to life imprisonment and the confiscation of all his property.

When brought to trial again, both of them chose to remain silent. After Pope Paul III made John Fisher a Cardinal, the King became more furious and accused him of treason, ordering his execution. His body was left on display for a full day, and his head was hung on London Bridge. Two weeks later, the execution of Saint Thomas More was carried out.
