Saint Aloysius grew up in Italy during the sixteenth century. That period in Italy was marked by a society that lived carelessly, morally degraded, and immersed in luxury. Seeing the sinful state of those around him, Aloysius became disheartened and resolved that he would never take part in such a life. Being born into a noble family, he had plenty of opportunities for entertainment. He greatly enjoyed horseback riding and the grand feasts held in the palace gardens. However, if he realized that the style of celebration was against morality, he would immediately withdraw from the event.

Aloysius did not merely desire to possess a good character; he longed to become a saint. In this pursuit, he was strict and uncompromising. The Gonzaga family, one of the prominent families of Renaissance Italy, was a lineage of military warriors. While every member of his family sought to conquer others, Saint Aloysius desired to conquer himself.

Aloysius aspired to become a priest. When he was between the ages of 12 and 13, he developed a plan to prepare himself for spiritual life. At night, he would get down from his bed and kneel for hours on the cold, stony floor in prayer. Many times, he would inflict pain upon himself by whipping his body with a dog’s leash. His desire to become a saint stemmed from his own inner will. But when he entered the Jesuit Order as a novice, he received a spiritual guide. It was Saint Robert Bellarmine who became his spiritual mentor.

Bellarmine corrected the extreme methods that Aloysius had undertaken for divine holiness and instead instructed him to follow the Jesuit disciplines of self-control, humility through small acts, and extended hours of prayer. Though Aloysius’s intense fervor sometimes irritated Bellarmine, he understood that the young man’s devotion was genuine and believed that with the right guidance, he would indeed become a saint. Aloysius recognized that his stubbornness was a problem. On one occasion, he wrote to his brother, saying, “I am a slightly bent piece of iron, and I have entered religious life to become straight.”

In January of 1591, a severe outbreak of the plague struck Rome. The hospitals in the city overflowed with infected patients. The Jesuit Order assigned all its priests and seminarians to serve the sick in the hospitals. For Aloysius, this was a challenging task. But as he began to care for the patients, his fear and anxiety turned into compassion. Without any hesitation, he went out into the streets of Rome, carrying the sick and dying on his own shoulders to the hospitals.

He cleaned them, found them beds, and gave them food. This close interaction with the infected was dangerous. Within weeks, Aloysius himself contracted the plague and died at the age of 23. In the sick, the helpless, and the dying, Saint Aloysius saw the crucified Christ and was deemed worthy of a heavenly reward. He is venerated as the patron saint of youth.
