When news of Agapetus’s death reached Rome, the reigning king, Theodahad, fearing an attack from the Eastern Goths, desired that someone of Gothic descent, close to him, should occupy the throne of Saint Peter. It was Silverius, the son of Pope Hormisdas, whom the king identified for this purpose. In the interest of maintaining unity, the clergy, though reluctant, yielded to the king’s wish and selected Silverius, who was then only a subdeacon, as pope. While the consecration of Silverius was underway in Rome, Empress Theodora, wife of the emperor, was devising plans to install Anthimus—a proponent of the Monophysite doctrine—as Patriarch of Constantinople.
Theodora sent Vigilius, who had served as papal representative in Constantinople and had been chosen as the successor to Pope Boniface II, to Rome, promising him the papacy. By the time Vigilius arrived in Rome, Silverius had already taken up his responsibilities for the Holy Church and had begun his new mission. Meanwhile, General Belisarius, under the emperor, advanced toward Rome with his army. As the Eastern army approached Rome, the Romans sought advice from Pope Silverius.
Realizing that resisting the Eastern army would be futile, the pope advised surrender. In early December of 536, the army captured Rome. At the insistence of the empress, General Belisarius summoned Pope Silverius to his quarters and informed him that he must either abdicate in line with her wishes or prepare to die. However, this initial tactic failed to sway Silverius. Consequently, the general accused the pope of opening the city gates to the Goths under King Vitiges, who were then retaliating, and fabricated evidence to support this accusation.
Following this, the general, obeying the empress’s wish, ordered Silverius to abdicate and declared Anthimus the patriarch. Silverius, however, refused to comply. The general did not offer a second chance; he had the saint arrested, stripped of his ecclesiastical garments despite his resistance, and formally deposed him. The clergy learned of this disgraceful act against the pope through a subdeacon. Subsequently, the general issued an order for a new papal election, and through political pressure and coercion, the ambitious Vigilius was elected pope.
Saint Silverius was exiled to Patara, a port city in Lycia. The local bishop, upon learning of this injustice, grew disturbed and personally informed Emperor Justinian about the wrongful treatment of the pope. The emperor, sensing truth in the matter, ordered Silverius to be brought back to Rome for a fair trial. He also instructed that, if found innocent, Silverius should be reinstated to the papacy.
However, as soon as the saint returned to Rome, the new pope ordered his exile to the island of Palmarola in the Tyrrhenian Sea. It was on this island that Pope Silverius renounced his papal office. Enduring many brutal tortures and starvation, Pope Silverius died as a martyr of the Church. He was buried on the same island to which he had been exiled. Later, his tomb became a center for many miraculous healings.
