Saint Marcus and Saint Marcellianus were twin brothers born into a noble Roman family. In their youth, they embraced the Christian faith, and not long after, both were married. However, when Emperor Diocletian rose to power in 284 AD, intense persecution against Christians began. As part of this persecution, the twin saints were arrested and condemned to be beheaded for their faith.
Before their sentence was carried out, their friends managed to secure a 30-day reprieve, hoping that within that time the saints would agree to renounce their faith and offer sacrifices to the pagan gods. During this period, their parents—Tranquillinus and Marcia—begged them in tears to change their minds. But God intervened through Saint Sebastian, a Christian officer serving in the imperial palace, who visited the parents daily, encouraging them and strengthening their faith.
Through these meetings, not only did the parents, but also the wives of the saints, convert to Christianity. Furthermore, Nicostratus, a public notary, and Chromatius, a judge, also embraced the Christian faith. Chromatius even renounced his position as judge and released the saints from custody.
A fellow Christian who worked in the imperial palace sheltered the saints in his quarters. Unfortunately, a betrayer exposed their hiding place, and they were captured once again. Fabian, who succeeded Chromatius as judge, ordered the brothers to be bound to pillars, with their feet nailed to the wood. They remained in this painful position through the night and the following day. The next day, they were subjected to brutal scourging with lances.
The twin saints attained their martyrdom in 286 AD.
In 1782, the relics of both saints, along with their father Saint Tranquillinus, were discovered near the tomb of Pope Saint Felix II in the Church of Saints Cosmas and Damian in Rome.
Because the city of Badajoz in Spain was miraculously delivered from various dangers through their intercession, Saints Marcus and Marcellianus have been especially venerated there ever since.
