During the persecution under Emperor Diocletian, Saints Nicander and Marcian attained martyrdom. It is believed that the same governor who sentenced Saint Julius to death in the province of Moesia in Illyricum also condemned these two saints. However, some modern scholars believe their martyrdom took place in Venafro, near Naples.
Both saints had served for a time in the Roman military. When imperial edicts targeting Christians were publicly proclaimed across the empire, they resigned from military service in protest. This act led to accusations against them, and they were brought before the provincial governor, Maximus, for trial.
Maximus reminded them of the imperial decree requiring everyone to offer sacrifices to the gods. To this, Nicander boldly replied:
“This decree is hard for Christians to obey, because abandoning the immortal God to worship stones and wood goes against our faith.”
Nicander’s wife Daria was present at the time and encouraged her husband in his decision. The governor tried to silence her, saying:
“Wicked woman! Why do you push your husband toward death?”
Daria replied:
“I do not desire his death. Since he believes in God, he will never truly die.”
The governor then turned again to Nicander and said,
“Take time and think carefully—choose life or death.”
Nicander responded:
“I have already thought about it and chosen to save myself.”
Thinking that Nicander was ready to obey and offer sacrifice, Maximus rejoiced and praised one of his advisors, Sudonius, celebrating what he believed was a victory. But Nicander immediately cried aloud:
“Thanks be to God!” and prayed earnestly for deliverance from the dangers and temptations of this world.
The governor, confused, asked,
“Didn’t you just say you wanted to live? Why now do you seek death?”
Nicander replied:
“It is not this fleeting life that I desire, but the eternal one. I freely offer my body to you—do with it as you will.”
Now it was Marcian’s turn. He told the governor,
“I share my fellow prisoner’s choice.”
Angered, the governor ordered both to be imprisoned in a dark cell, where they remained for twenty days. When brought back before the governor, he again asked,
“Do you now wish to obey the emperor’s decree?”
Marcian replied:
“No matter what you say, we will never abandon or deny our God and our faith. Through faith we cling to Him, and we know He is calling us. We will not beg you to release us from prison—send us to Him as soon as possible, that we may see the One who died on the Cross for us. You ask us to abandon the One we worship and honor?”
Furious, the governor sentenced both saints to be beheaded.
As they were led to execution, they thanked the governor:
“Most merciful judge, may peace be upon you.”
They walked joyfully to the place of execution, praising God as they went. Nicander was accompanied by his wife Daria, his child, and his brother Papinianus. Marcian’s wife followed in mourning, trying desperately to persuade him to change his mind. She raised their child toward him and pulled at his robes, urging him not to go through with it.
At the place of execution, Marcian embraced his child and said,
“Lord of all power, receive this child into Your care.”
Knowing that his wife could not bear to see his death, he gave her leave to depart.
Daria, on the other hand, stood firm beside Nicander. She said:
“I have lived with you in our home for ten years, and you have never once failed in prayer. Now, may I too receive the comfort of that prayer. As you enter into eternal glory, you make me the wife of a martyr. Because you are testifying to the divine truth, I too will be freed from death.”
Her words meant that through Nicander’s faith, suffering, and prayer, she too would share in the mercy of God.
The executioner bound their eyes with a strip of linen and then beheaded them. The two saints were martyred on June 17.
