സമ്പന്നമായ ഒരു കുടുംബത്തിലായിരുന്നു ജോണ്‍ ഫ്രാന്‍സിസ് റെജിസ് ജനിച്ചത്. ബാല്യത്തില്‍ തന്നെ തനിക്ക് വിദ്യാഭ്യാസം പകര്‍ന്നു നല്‍കിയ ഈശോസഭയിലെ സന്യാസിമാരില്‍ അദ്ദേഹം ആകൃഷ്ടനാവുകയും ആ സഭയില്‍ ചേരുവാന്‍ ആഗ്രഹിക്കുകയും ചെയ്തു. തന്റെ 18-മത്തെ വയസ്സില്‍ ജോണ്‍ സെമിനാരിയില്‍ ചേര്‍ന്നു. വിദ്യാഭ്യാസത്തിന്റേതായ വളരെ കഠിനമായ തിരക്കുകള്‍ക്കിടയിലും, ആരോഗ്യത്തെ ചൊല്ലിയുള്ള സെമിനാരിയിലെ സഹപാഠികളുടെ മുന്നറിയിപ്പിനെ വകവെക്കാതെയും നിരവധി മണിക്കൂറുകള്‍ വിശുദ്ധന് ദേവാലയത്തില്‍ ചിലവഴിക്കുമായിരുന്നു.
പുരോഹിത പട്ട സ്വീകരണത്തിന് ശേഷം ഫ്രാന്‍സിലെ വിവിധ നഗരങ്ങളില്‍ പ്രേഷിത പ്രവര്‍ത്തനമെന്ന ദൗത്യമാണ് വിശുദ്ധന് സ്വീകരിച്ചത്. അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ പ്രസംഗങ്ങള്‍ വളരെ ലളിതമായിരുന്നു. പക്ഷേ അവയെല്ലാം വിശുദ്ധന്റെ ഉള്ളിലുള്ള ഭക്തിയെ വെളിപ്പെടുത്തുന്നവയായിരുന്നു. കൂടാതെ അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ പ്രസംഗങ്ങള്‍ എല്ലാതരത്തിലുള്ള ജനങ്ങളേയും ആകര്‍ഷിച്ചു. ദരിദ്രരുടെ കാര്യത്തില്‍ പ്രത്യേകം ശ്രദ്ധാലുവായിരുന്നു റെജിസ്. പ്രഭാതവേളകളില്‍ ഭൂരിഭാഗം സമയം കുമ്പസാര കൂട്ടിലായിരിന്നു വിശുദ്ധന് ചിലവഴിച്ചിരുന്നത്. ഉച്ചക്ക് ശേഷം ജയിലുകളും, ആശുപത്രികളും സന്ദര്‍ശിക്കുന്നതിനായി മാറ്റി വെച്ചു.
ജനങ്ങളുമായി ഇടപഴകുന്നതില്‍ വിശുദ്ധന്റെ സാമര്‍ത്ഥ്യം വിവിയേഴ്സിലെ മെത്രാന്റെ ശ്രദ്ധയില്‍ പെട്ടു. ഫ്രാന്‍സിലെ അന്നത്തെ സാഹചര്യം ആഭ്യന്തര ലഹളകളാലും, മതപരമായ പോരാട്ടങ്ങളാലും കലുഷിതമായിരുന്നു. സഭാപിതാക്കന്‍മാരുടെ അഭാവവും, പുരോഹിതന്‍മാരുടെ അലംഭാവവും കാരണം ഏതാണ്ട് ഇരുപത് വര്‍ഷത്തോളമായി ജനങ്ങള്‍ ആരാധനകളില്‍ നിന്നും, ദേവാലയത്തില്‍ നിന്നും അകന്ന്‍ മാറിയ അവസ്ഥയിലായിരുന്നു. പ്രൊട്ടസ്റ്റന്റ് വിഭാഗങ്ങള്‍ അങ്ങിങ്ങായി സജീവമായിരുന്നുവെങ്കിലും, പൊതുവേ മതത്തോടുള്ള ആളുകളുടെ താത്പര്യമില്ലായ്മ പ്രകടമായിരുന്നു. മൂന്ന് വര്‍ഷത്തോളം വിശുദ്ധന് രൂപതകളില്‍ നിന്നും രൂപതകളിലേക്ക് സഞ്ചരിച്ചു. നിരവധി ആളുകളെ ക്രിസ്തീയ വിശ്വാസത്തിലേക്ക് ആനയിക്കുന്നതില്‍ വിശുദ്ധന് വിജയം കൈവരിച്ചു.
കാനഡയിലെ വടക്കേ അമേരിക്കന്‍ ഇന്ത്യക്കാര്‍ക്കിടയില്‍ സുവിശേഷ പ്രഘോഷണം നടത്തുന്നതിനായിരുന്നു വിശുദ്ധന് ആഗ്രഹിച്ചിരുന്നതെങ്കിലും, ഫ്രാന്‍സിലെ ഒറ്റപ്പെട്ട പ്രദേശങ്ങളില്‍ പ്രവര്‍ത്തിക്കേണ്ടതായിരിന്നു ദൈവഹിതം. അവിടെ അദ്ദേഹത്തിന് പ്രതികൂല കാലാവസ്ഥയേയും, മഞ്ഞിനേയും കൂടാതെ നിരവധിയായ മറ്റുള്ള തടസ്സങ്ങളേയും നേരിടേണ്ടതായി വന്നു. ഇതിനിടയിലും അദ്ദേഹം തന്റെ സുവിശേഷ പ്രഘോഷണ ദൗത്യങ്ങള്‍ അഭംഗുരം തുടരുകയും ഒരു വിശുദ്ധന് സമാനമായ കീര്‍ത്തി നേടുകയും ചെയ്തു.
വിശുദ്ധന്റെ ജീവിതത്തിലെ അവസാന നാല് വര്‍ഷക്കാലം തടവറകളിലും, പാവപ്പെട്ടവര്‍ക്കും, രോഗികള്‍ക്കുമിടയിലാണ് ചിലവഴിച്ചിരിന്നത്. 1640-ലെ വസന്തകാലത്ത് ജോണ്‍ ഫ്രാന്‍സിസ് റെജിസിന് തന്റെ നാളുകള്‍ എണ്ണപ്പെട്ട് കഴിഞ്ഞുവെന്ന്‍ മനസ്സിലാക്കി. ദൈവത്തേയും, ദൈവത്തിന്റെ സ്നേഹത്തേയും കുറിച്ച് ജനങ്ങളോട് പ്രഘോഷിച്ചുകൊണ്ട് വിശുദ്ധന് നിത്യസമ്മാനത്തിനായി വേണ്ടവിധം തയ്യാറെടുപ്പുകള്‍ നടത്തി. ഡിസംബര്‍ 31ന് വിശുദ്ധന് തന്റെ ആത്മാവിനെ ദൈവത്തിന്റെ കരങ്ങളില്‍ ഏല്‍പ്പിച്ചു. “നിന്റെ കരങ്ങളില്‍ ഞാന്‍ എന്റെ ആത്മാവിനെ ഏല്‍പ്പിക്കുന്നു” എന്നായിരുന്നു വിശുദ്ധന്റെ അവസാന വാക്കുകള്‍. 1737-ലാണ് ജോണ്‍ ഫ്രാന്‍സിസ് റെജിസിനെ വിശുദ്ധനായി പ്രഖ്യാപിച്ചത്.
Saint John Francis Regis was born into a wealthy family. From a young age, he was drawn to the Jesuit priests who were responsible for his education, and he longed to join their order. At the age of 18, John entered the seminary. Despite the demanding schedule of his studies and warnings from his peers about his health, he would spend many hours in prayer at the church.
After receiving the Sacrament of Holy Orders, he accepted a missionary calling to various towns and cities in France. His sermons were simple but reflected the deep devotion that filled his heart. His words attracted people from all walks of life. Regis had a special concern for the poor. Most of his mornings were spent in the confessional, and his afternoons were dedicated to visiting prisons and hospitals.
His ability to engage with people caught the attention of the Bishop of Viviers. At that time, France was plagued by internal unrest and religious conflicts. Due to the absence of shepherds and the negligence of priests, people had stayed away from church and prayer for nearly twenty years. Although Protestant groups were active in some areas, general interest in religion had declined. For three years, Saint Regis traveled tirelessly from one diocese to another, successfully bringing many back to the Christian faith.
Although he deeply desired to preach the Gospel to the Native American people in Canada, it was God’s will for him to serve in the remote regions of France. There he had to endure harsh winters, snow, and numerous other hardships. Nevertheless, he continued his mission with unshakable dedication and earned the reputation of a true saint.
The last four years of his life were spent mainly among prisoners, the poor, and the sick. In the spring of 1640, John Francis Regis understood that his days were coming to an end. Proclaiming the love of God and preparing himself for eternal reward, he offered his final days in humble service. On December 31, he surrendered his soul into the hands of God. His final words were: “Into Your hands, O Lord, I commend my spirit.”
Saint John Francis Regis was canonized in 1737.
