In 1579, Saint Germaine Cousin was born in the small village of Pibrac, located not far from Toulouse in France. From the early days of her life, she was weak and sickly. Throughout her lifetime, she suffered from a disease resembling tuberculosis, which affected the glands in her neck. In addition to this, her right arm and hand were deformed and partially paralyzed. Despite these numerous hardships, she was a beautiful girl with a pleasant personality that endeared her to others.
She endured the cruel punishments of her stepmother without protest. She used to sleep in a small room beneath the staircase filled with straw and woodchips. Whether in summer or in the freezing cold of winter, she would rise early in the morning and take the sheep to graze in the fields, staying there until evening, constantly keeping watch over them. During this time, she was also required to spin yarn. If she failed to spin the amount prescribed by her stepmother, she would be punished severely.
However, unlike the adults, the children of the village did not treat this helpless girl with hostility. They enjoyed listening to her speak about kindness and God’s love while she tended the sheep. The only form of education she ever received was the catechism lessons held in the village church after Sunday Mass. She would participate in these classes with great joy. The long hours spent alone in the fields and nights spent in the barn were used in conversation with God. Not once did she complain about her harsh life.
Every morning, she would attend Holy Mass. It was her custom to kneel and pray before the image of the Blessed Virgin Mary. On her way to church, she had to cross a small stream. Though it was a minor stream, after heavy rains it would turn into a powerful and frightening flow of water. On such occasions, when Saint Germaine approached, the waters of the stream would part, allowing her to walk across on dry ground—an event witnessed with wonder by the villagers many times. When she had to leave her sheep to attend church, she would stick her staff upright in the ground and leave. None of the sheep ever strayed from around the staff.
One day, while Germaine Cousin was leading the sheep along the road, her stepmother approached and accused her of stealing bread and hiding it in her cloak. To prove her innocence, Saint Germaine unfolded the hem of her cloak, and to everyone’s amazement, a multitude of fragrant flowers—unlike any ever seen in that region—fell to the ground.
In 1601, Saint Germaine died at the age of 21. Her body was buried in the village church.
Forty-three years later, when her grave was opened to bury the body of one of her relatives, the workers were astonished by what they saw. The body of a beautiful young girl lay inside, completely uncorrupted. One of the workers accidentally struck the tip of her nose with a spade, and blood began to flow from the wound. Some of the elderly people in the village recognized the body as that of Germaine Cousin.
One miracle followed another. The girl who had once lived in neglect and poverty in the small village of Pibrac was canonized in 1867 by Pope Pius IX. Every year, thousands of pilgrims visit the church in Pibrac where the relics of Saint Germaine are preserved.
