Saint Bardo was born in 982 into a noble family in Oppershofen, Germany. He received his first lessons in education from an elderly woman. She taught the saint to read letters and psalms while he sat on her lap. Even after many years, the saint remembered the kindness that old woman had shown him and took actions to care for her in return. Saint Bardo completed the rest of his education in Fulda. There, he received the Benedictine religious habit and eventually became a teacher at the local university.

In 1029, after being ordained a priest, Saint Bardo was appointed abbot of the monastery at Werden am Ruhr, based on his familial ties with the emperor.

Once, while the saint was in the royal capital, the Metropolitan of Mainz happened to see the staff of authority in Bardo’s hand. Observing this, the Metropolitan remarked, “Abbot, I believe that staff would be better in my hand than in yours.” To this, Bardo responded, “If that is how you think, then for your sake, receiving it would not be such a difficult task.”

Upon returning to his residence, the saint called his servant, gave him the staff and other official seals, and asked him to present them as a gift to the Metropolitan. In 1031, he was appointed abbot of the monastery at Hersfeld and was also proposed as the successor to the Metropolitan of Mainz. However, his beginnings as Metropolitan were rather unfortunate.

One Christmas morning, while preaching the Gospel before the emperor, the saint was unable to preach well—whether due to illness or the solemnity of the occasion. Those who listened began to speak poorly of him. Even the emperor began to feel that appointing someone inexperienced as bishop of the most important diocese in Germany might have been a mistake. A few days later, Bardo had to preach before the emperor once again.

Though his friends advised him against it, the saint replied, “Every man must carry his own burden.” Then he faced his trial by fire. This time, he preached with great enthusiasm and passion. The emperor, pleased with the sermon, later said at his dinner table, “The Metropolitan has satisfied my hunger.”

Despite holding high positions, the saint lived with the simplicity of a monk until the end of his life. He practiced a very austere lifestyle—so much so that even Pope Saint Leo IX once advised him to show some leniency in his rigorous way of life. His love for the poor, the needy, and even animals deserves special mention. He was a great protector of birds and collected rare species, cared for them, and even trained them to eat from his own dish.

In his diocese, Saint Bardo was a very active shepherd. He was both the chief priest and a true father to his flock. The construction of the great cathedral dedicated to Saint Martin was completed by him. He also protected many people from unjust and harsh punishments.

Saint Bardo deeply detested bad habits such as drunkenness. He often advised people—especially the youth—about the importance of self-control, discipline, and patience. In 1053, he passed away in the Lord at Mainz. The Universal Catholic Church celebrates his feast on June 10.
