June 09:

Saint Ephrem was born as the son of a resident of Nisibis in Mesopotamia. He received his education under the guidance of Bishop James, who also baptized him. Ephrem advanced rapidly in holiness and knowledge, and was soon appointed as a teacher at the school of Nisibis. After the death of Bishop James, the Persians captured Nisibis. Consequently, Ephrem moved to Edessa.

Upon arriving in Edessa, he initially stayed with hermits living in the mountains and later began a monastic life in solitude to escape from the crowds that gathered around him. Although he was ordained a deacon at the church in Edessa, due to his profound humility, he refused priesthood. He was enriched with every virtue and strove to attain devotion and faith through true knowledge.

He renounced all worldly and perishable things and was filled with a desire to attain the divine and imperishable. Later, the Holy Spirit led him to Caesarea in Cappadocia. There he met Basil, who was the spokesperson of the Church. Both gained much knowledge through their mutual dialogues.

During that time, Saint Ephrem wrote many works in the Syriac language to correct certain misconceptions that were troubling the Church and to explain the mysteries of Jesus Christ. Most of these were translated into Greek. Saint Jerome has testified that during those times, Ephrem’s writings were often read in churches following the Gospel readings, showing how famous his works were.

Because of the hymns he wrote in praise of the Blessed Mother and the saints, the Syrians called Ephrem the “Harp of the Holy Spirit.” His special devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary deserves particular mention. Fully adorned with many virtues, Saint Ephrem entered eternal rest in the Lord in Edessa, Mesopotamia. According to the ancient Roman calendar, he died on July 14 during the reign of Emperor Valens.

At the request of many Cardinals, Metropolitans, Bishops, Patriarchs, monastic superiors, and religious congregations of the Holy Catholic Church, Pope Benedict XV declared Saint Ephrem as a Doctor of the Universal Church.
