Saint Robert was born in Gargrave, England, at the beginning of the twelfth century. After completing his studies at the University of Paris, Robert received priestly ordination and became the vicar of the parish in Gargrave. In 1132, he became a monk at the monastery in Whitby, England. During that time, he came to know about the expulsion of thirteen monks from St. Mary’s Abbey in York due to their demand for the reinstatement of the Benedictine rule. In the middle of winter, Saint Robert went to Whitby to join those thirteen monks. They lived in a hut made of branches and straw on the banks of the River Skeld near Ripon.
By spring, they moved to Clairvaux, where they lived in extreme poverty for nearly two years.
Soon, people began to recognize their holiness. This attracted another person desiring the monastic life—Hugh, who was the Dean of York. He donated all his possessions to the monastic community and laid the foundation for the monastery at Fountains. In 1137, Rainulf, the lord of Morpeth, was drawn to the life of the monks at Fountains and built another monastery for them in Northumberland, named Newminster.
Saint Robert became the abbot of that monastery. His holy life and guidance led his fellow monks toward spiritual perfection. Within the next ten years, three more monastic communities emerged from this monastery, and it became a center of holiness. Additionally, Saint Robert established three more monasteries—at Pipewell in 1143, at Roche in 1147, and at Sawley in 1148.
Saint Robert was well known for his compassion, holiness, and deep spirituality. He was deeply immersed in prayer and relied on it greatly. He was also a spiritual writer and an exorcist. He led an austere life, often fasting by abstaining from food and water, especially during Lent.
On one Easter day, due to the fasting during Lent, Saint Robert’s stomach deteriorated, and he became very weak. Finally, he tried to eat a piece of bread soaked in honey. However, before the food could be brought to him, he changed his mind and, without even touching it, gave it to the poor.
Saint Robert would occasionally visit the divinely inspired Saint Godric of Finchale. At the time of Saint Robert’s death in 1159, Saint Godric saw his soul in the form of a fiery orb. He saw angels carrying his soul along a radiant path and the gates of heaven being opened for them.
Until his death on June 7, 1159, Saint Robert and his fellow monks resided in the Newminster Abbey, and the monastery came to be known by his name as well.
