ഒരു പുരോഹിതനായിരുന്നുവെങ്കിലും നോര്‍ബെര്‍ട്ട് ലൗകീക ജീവിതത്തിന് ഏറെ പ്രാധാന്യം നല്‍കുന്ന വ്യക്തിയായിരിന്നു. 1115ലാണ് നോര്‍ബെര്‍ട്ടിന്റെ ജീവിതത്തില്‍ പെട്ടെന്നുള്ള മാറ്റം ഉണ്ടായത്. ഒരു ദിവസം നോര്‍ബെര്‍ട്ട് കുതിരപ്പുറത്ത് യാത്ര ചെയ്തുകൊണ്ടിരിക്കെ, ഒരു ഇടിമുഴക്കമുണ്ടാവുകയും, വിശുദ്ധന്റെ തൊട്ടു മുമ്പിലായി അതിശക്തമായ മിന്നല്‍ വെളിച്ചം പതിക്കുകയും ചെയ്തു. ഭയന്നുപോയ കുതിര വിശുദ്ധനെ ദൂരേക്ക് കുടഞ്ഞെറിഞ്ഞു. ഇതിനിടെ താന്‍ നയിച്ച്‌വരുന്ന ലൗകീകമായ ജീവിതരീതികളെ പ്രതി തന്നെ ശാസിക്കുന്നതായ ഒരു ശബ്ദവും വിശുദ്ധന്‍ കേട്ടു.
വിശുദ്ധ പൗലോസിന് സംഭവിച്ചതുപോലെ തന്നെ ഈ അനുഭവം വിശുദ്ധ നോര്‍ബെര്‍ട്ടില്‍ ഒരു സമൂലമായ മാറ്റത്തിന് കാരണമായി. തന്റെ സമ്പത്തും, ഭൂമിയും, വരുമാനവും ഉപേക്ഷിച്ച് ത്യാഗത്തിന്റേതായ ഒരു ജീവിതം നയിക്കുവാന്‍ വിശുദ്ധന്‍ തീരുമാനിക്കുകയും, സുവിശേഷ പ്രഘോഷണത്തിനായി തന്റെ ജീവിതം ഉഴിഞ്ഞു വയ്ക്കുകയും ചെയ്തു. 1120-ല്‍ വിശുദ്ധന്‍ ‘പ്രിമോണ്‍സ്ട്രാറ്റെന്‍ഷ്യന്‍സ്’ എന്ന സന്യാസ സഭക്ക് സ്ഥാപനം നല്‍കി. പ്രിമോണ്‍ട്രിയിലായിരുന്നു അവരുടെ ആദ്യത്തെ ആശ്രമം. വിശുദ്ധ ആഗസ്റ്റിന്റെ സന്യാസ നിയമങ്ങളായിരുന്നു ഈ സഭയും പിന്തുടര്‍ന്നിരുന്നത്. 1126-ലാണ് ഹോണോറിയൂസ് രണ്ടാമന്‍ പാപ്പാ ഈ പുതിയ സന്യാസസഭക്ക് അംഗീകാരം നല്‍കിയത്.
1125-ല്‍ മഗ്ദേബര്‍ഗിലെ മെത്രാപ്പോലീത്തയായി വിശുദ്ധനെ നാമനിര്‍ദ്ദേശം ചെയ്യപ്പെട്ടു. 1126 ജൂലൈ 13ന് വിശുദ്ധന്‍ മഗ്ദേബര്‍ഗ് നഗരത്തില്‍ പ്രവേശിച്ചു. വളരെ ലളിതമായ വസ്ത്രം ധരിച്ച് നഗ്നപാദനായി എത്തിയ മെത്രാനെ കണ്ടിട്ട് മെത്രാപ്പോലീത്തായുടെ വസതിയിലെ കാവല്ക്കാരന് ആളെ മനസ്സിലാക്കുവാന്‍ കഴിഞ്ഞില്ല, അതിനാല്‍ അയാള്‍ വിശുദ്ധനെ അകത്തേക്ക് പ്രവേശിപ്പിച്ചില്ല. പിന്നീട്, കാവല്ക്കാരന് ഇതിനേപ്രതി വിശുദ്ധനോട് ക്ഷമ ചോദിച്ചപ്പോള്‍ വിശുദ്ധന്റെ മറുപടി ഇപ്രകാരമായിരിന്നു, “എന്നെ നിര്‍ബന്ധപൂര്‍വ്വം ഇവിടേക്ക് പറഞ്ഞയച്ചവരേക്കാള്‍ കൂടുതലായി നീ എന്നെ മനസ്സിലാക്കുകയും, വ്യക്തമായി എന്നെ കാണുകയും ചെയ്തിരിക്കുന്നു. ദരിദ്രനും, നിസ്സാരനുമായ മനുഷ്യനാണ് ഞാന്‍, ഈ സ്ഥലത്ത് ഞാന്‍ ഒട്ടും തന്നെ യോജിച്ചവനല്ല”
Though he was a priest, Norbert was a person who gave great importance to a secular lifestyle. It was in the year 1115 that a sudden transformation occurred in Norbert’s life. One day, while traveling on horseback, there was a thunderclap, and a powerful flash of lightning struck right in front of the saint. The frightened horse threw him far off. At that moment, the saint heard a voice reproaching him for the secular way of life he had been leading.
Just like what happened to Saint Paul, this experience brought about a radical change in Saint Norbert. He decided to renounce his wealth, land, and income, and dedicate himself to a life of sacrifice, fully committing his life to the proclamation of the Gospel. In 1120, the saint founded a religious order known as the Premonstratensians. Their first monastery was established at Prémontré. This order also followed the monastic rule of Saint Augustine. In 1126, Pope Honorius II officially approved this new religious order.
In 1125, Saint Norbert was nominated as the Metropolitan Archbishop of Magdeburg. On July 13, 1126, he entered the city of Magdeburg. Wearing very simple clothing and walking barefoot, the archbishop was not recognized by the guard at the archbishop’s residence and was denied entry. Later, when the guard realized who he was and apologized, the saint replied:
“You have understood and seen me more clearly than those who forcibly sent me here. I am a poor and insignificant man, utterly unworthy of this place.”
