അപരിഷ്കൃതരായ അവിശ്വാസികളില്‍ നിന്നും ക്രിസ്തുമതത്തിലേക്ക് മതപരിവര്‍ത്തനം ചെയ്ത 22 ഉഗാണ്ടന്‍ രക്തസാക്ഷികളില്‍ ഒരാളായിരുന്നു ചാള്‍സ്. തന്റെ മരണത്തിന് ഒരു വര്‍ഷം മുന്‍പ് 1885 നവംബറിലായിരുന്നു വിശുദ്ധന് ജ്ഞാനസ്നാനം സ്വീകരിച്ചത്. തുടര്‍ന്ന്‍ വിശുദ്ധന് ഒരു ധര്‍മ്മനിഷ്ഠനായ നേതാവായി തീര്‍ന്നു. ചാള്‍സ് അവിടത്തെ രാജധാനിയിലെ സേവകരുടെ മുഖ്യനും, കൊട്ടാരത്തിലെ ഏറ്റവും ശക്തനായ കായികാഭ്യാസിയുമായിരുന്നു. “ഉഗാണ്ട രാജ്യത്തിലെ ഏറ്റവും സുമുഖനായ പുരുഷന്‍” എന്ന വിശേഷണവും വിശുദ്ധന് ഉണ്ടായിരുന്നു.
ചാള്‍സ് തന്റെ കൂട്ടുകാര്‍ക്ക് കത്തോലിക്കാ വിശ്വാസത്തെക്കുറിച്ച് പറഞ്ഞു കൊടുക്കുകയും, തന്റെ സഹസേവകരെ ജ്ഞാനസ്നാനപ്പെടുത്തുകയും ചെയ്തു. തന്റെ സഹാചാരികളെ വിശുദ്ധന് വിശ്വസ്തരും, വിശുദ്ധിയുള്ളവരുമായിരിക്കുവാന്‍ പ്രേരിപ്പിച്ചു. ബബന്‍ഡന്‍ ഭരണാധികാരിയായിരുന്ന വാന്‍ഗായുടെ അസാന്മാര്‍ഗ്ഗിക പ്രവര്‍ത്തികളില്‍ നിന്നും, സ്വവര്‍ഗ്ഗ ലൈംഗീക ചൂഷണങ്ങളില്‍ നിന്നും വിശുദ്ധന് സഹപ്രവര്‍ത്തകരെ സംരക്ഷിച്ചു.
വാന്‍ഗ അന്ധവിശ്വാസിയും വിജാതീയനുമായിരുന്ന രാജാവായിരുന്നു. ആദ്യമൊക്കെ അദ്ദേഹം കത്തോലിക്കാ മതത്തോട് സഹിഷ്ണുതാപൂര്‍വ്വമായിരുന്നു പെരുമാറിയിരുന്നത്. പക്ഷേ, അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ മുഖ്യസഹായിയായിരുന്ന കാടികിരോ പതിയെ പതിയെ രാജാവിന്റെ മനസ്സിലേക്ക് വര്‍ഗീയ വിഷം കുത്തി വെച്ചു. ക്രിസ്ത്യാനികള്‍ രാജാവിന്റെ ഭരണത്തിന് ഒരു ഭീഷണിയായി തീരുമെന്ന് വാന്‍ഗായെ പറഞ്ഞു വിശ്വസിപ്പിക്കുന്നതില്‍ കാടികിരോ വിജയിച്ചു. ചാള്‍സിനെ വധശിക്ഷക്ക് വിധിച്ചപ്പോള്‍ അദ്ദേഹം വളരെ ആഹ്ലാദവാനായിരുന്നു.
വിശുദ്ധനെ കൊല്ലുവാന്‍ നിയോഗിക്കപ്പെട്ട ആള്‍, ചാള്‍സ് അഗ്നിക്കിരയായി മരിക്കുവാന്‍ പോവുകയാണെന്ന് പറഞ്ഞപ്പോള്‍ വിശുദ്ധന്റെ മറുപടി ഇപ്രകാരമായിരിന്നു, ‘യഥാര്‍ത്ഥ വിശ്വാസത്തിനു വേണ്ടി മരിക്കുന്നതില്‍ ഞാന്‍ വളരെയധികം സന്തോഷിക്കുന്നു’. തീയില്‍ വെന്തുരുകുമ്പോഴും വിശുദ്ധന് വേദനകൊണ്ട് ചെറുതായി പോലും കരഞ്ഞില്ല. പകരം “കോതണ്ടാ (എന്റെ ദൈവമേ)” എന്ന് വിളിക്കുക മാത്രമാണ് ചെയ്തത്.
1886 ജൂണ്‍ 3നാണ് വാന്‍ഗായുടെ ഉത്തരവ് പ്രകാരം വിശുദ്ധനെ അഗ്നിക്കിരയാക്കി കൊലപ്പെടുത്തിയത്. പോള്‍ ആറാമന്‍ പാപ്പാ ചാള്‍സ് ലവാങ്ങയേയും, അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ സഹചാരികളേയും 1964 ജൂണ്‍ 22ന് വിശുദ്ധരായി പ്രഖ്യാപിച്ചു. റോമന്‍ ദിനസൂചികയില്‍ വിശുദ്ധന്റെ ഓര്‍മ്മ തിരുനാള്‍ ജൂണ്‍ 3നാണ്. ആഫ്രിക്കന്‍ കത്തോലിക്കാ യുവജനതയുടെ മാദ്ധ്യസ്ഥനാണ് വിശുദ്ധ ചാള്‍സ് ലവാങ്ങ.
Charles was one among the 22 Ugandan martyrs who converted from the uncivilized, non-believing communities to Christianity. It was in November 1885, one year before his death, that the saint received baptism. Thereafter, the saint became a devout and righteous leader. Charles was the chief of the royal pages in the capital of Uganda and the strongest athlete in the royal court. He was also described as “the most handsome man in the kingdom of Uganda.”
Charles taught his companions about the Catholic faith and baptized his fellow servants. He inspired his associates to be faithful and live a life of holiness. He protected his fellow workers from the immoral acts and homosexual abuses of King Mwanga, the ruler of Buganda.
Mwanga was a superstitious and pagan king. Initially, he had behaved with some tolerance toward the Catholic faith. However, his chief advisor, Katikiro, gradually poisoned the king’s mind with sectarian hatred. Katikiro succeeded in convincing Mwanga that Christians were a threat to his rule. When Charles was sentenced to death, he was filled with great joy.
When the executioner told him that he was going to die by fire, Charles replied: “I am extremely happy to die for the true faith.” Even while burning in the fire, the saint did not shed a single tear due to the pain. Instead, he only cried out, “Kothanda (My God).”
On June 3, 1886, following Mwanga’s order, the saint was burned to death. Pope Paul VI canonized Charles Lwanga and his companions as saints on June 22, 1964. In the Roman liturgical calendar, the feast day of the saint is observed on June 3. Saint Charles Lwanga is the patron of African Catholic youth.
