June 01:

Justin was the son of Priscus, a native of Nablus in Palestine. It was for the sake of education that the saint spent his entire youth. When he reached adulthood, due to an insatiable desire for philosophy, Justin became a student of philosophy and studied in detail the works of all philosophers. The saint realized that most of them contained erroneous and intricate doctrines. From an unknown old man, the saint received the light of divine wisdom and came to understand that the Christian faith is the true vision. He then embraced Christianity. After being united with Christ, the Holy Scriptures were always in his hands, day and night. The divine fire ignited by his prayers always filled the saint’s soul. Having gained profound knowledge about Jesus, the saint dedicated all his wisdom to writing books that propagated the Christian faith.

Among the most important of Saint Justin’s works were the Christian apologetic writings that pointed out the relevance and necessity of the Christian faith. It was a time when the emperor Antoninus Pius, along with his sons Marcus Antoninus Verus and Lucius Aurelius Commodus, was brutally persecuting Christians. Before the emperor’s senate, the saint submitted his arguments in defence of the Christian faith. His arguments for the protection of the faith led to the issuance of a general decree to stop the mass killing of Christians.

Even though he saved many people, the saint could not save himself. False accusations were made against the saint, and he was arrested and brought before Rusticus, the chief judge in Rome. Rusticus questioned the saint about the principles of the Christian faith. In the presence of many witnesses, the saint openly declared their faith as follows: “These are the true divine doctrines of us Christians; we believe in the one God, the creator of all things, both visible and invisible; we confess the Lord Jesus Christ, the Son of God the Father, about whom the prophets of old had foretold beforehand; He has come to judge all of humankind.”

When the chief judge asked the saint where he and the other Christians usually gathered in the city, fearing that the Christian faith’s secrets and his fellow believers might be betrayed, the saint pointed to a place near the well-known church at Pudens. Then the chief demanded that the saint offer sacrifices to their gods or be subjected to cruel torture. The saint boldly replied that he feared nothing, had long desired to suffer for Jesus, and hoped to receive the great reward for it in heaven. The chief then ordered the saint to be executed. Offering praise to God, he endured cruel tortures with a scourge. Then, shedding his blood for Jesus, the saint received the crown of martyrdom.
