Saint Peter Chrysologus was born around 400 AD in Imola, a city in northern Italy. He received his early ecclesiastical formation under Cornelius, the bishop of Imola, who eventually ordained him a deacon.

In 433 AD, following the death of the Archbishop of Ravenna, the clergy and people of the city chose a successor and sent Bishop Cornelius to Rome to seek the approval of Pope Sixtus III. He was accompanied by his deacon, Peter.

However, when the Pope saw Peter, he set aside the original candidate and instead appointed Peter himself as the new Archbishop of Ravenna. At first, the clergy and the faithful of Ravenna were reluctant to accept Peter. But in time, Peter gained their trust and respect, becoming a close confidant of Emperor Valentinian III and a renowned leader among the faithful.

At that time, traces of pagan idol worship still lingered in the region. Archbishop Peter focused his early efforts on eradicating these remnants and rooting the Catholic faith firmly in his diocese. Through his powerful homilies, he condemned lingering superstitions and corrected improper liturgical practices.

Saint Peter emphasized the frequent reception of the Holy Eucharist, famously stating:

“He who wants to laugh with the devil cannot rejoice with Christ.”

Ravenna, by then, had become the imperial capital of the Western Roman Empire, replacing Rome itself. As the metropolitan of such a crucial ecclesiastical center, Peter became one of the most influential church leaders of the 5th century.

Renowned for the clarity, brevity, and power of his sermons, Saint Peter was later given the title “Chrysologus,” meaning “Golden-Worded.” His homilies are rich in doctrine, deeply rooted in Scripture, and are marked by theological precision and pastoral sensitivity. For this, he was later proclaimed a Doctor of the Church.

Sensing his impending death, Peter returned to his hometown of Imola, where he peacefully passed away around 450 AD. He was buried in the Basilica of Saint Cassian in Imola.

In 1729, Pope Benedict XIII officially declared Saint Peter Chrysologus a Doctor of the Church, recognizing his invaluable contribution to the Church’s preaching tradition and doctrinal clarity.
