When Jesus was in Judea, He often found joy and comfort in staying at the home of His beloved friends Martha, Mary, and Lazarus in Bethany. One such visit is beautifully recorded in the Holy Scriptures. During that occasion, Martha was busy with much serving, attending to the needs of her Master with urgency and care. Seeing that Mary was sitting quietly at Jesus’ feet, not assisting her, Martha asked Jesus to tell Mary to help her. But the Lord’s response surprised her:
“Mary has chosen the better part, which will not be taken away from her.” (Luke 10:42)
Martha was born into a noble and wealthy family, and she, along with her siblings, showed great eagerness in offering hospitality and care to their beloved Lord Jesus.
After Jesus’ Ascension into heaven, Martha, Mary, Lazarus, their maidservant Marcella, and several other Christians from their household were captured by the Jews, who sought to persecute followers of Christ. They were placed into a boat without sails or oars and cast into the open sea, intending that they would perish in the waters. But by God’s loving providence, the boat was miraculously guided to safety, and they all landed securely in Marseilles, in modern-day France.
There, they began to preach the Gospel, proclaiming the miracle that had saved them. Through their witness, many in Marseilles, Aix, and the surrounding regions embraced the Christian faith. Eventually, Lazarus was consecrated as the bishop of Marseilles, and Maximin became bishop of Aix.
Mary Magdalene, who loved solitude and sitting at the feet of Jesus, chose a life of complete seclusion in a mountain cave. It is believed she lived there for about thirty years, with no human contact, entirely in contemplative union with God. According to pious tradition, angels would carry her to heaven each day so that she could hear the heavenly hymns of praise.
Martha, on the other hand, remained active in ministry. Through her holiness and compassion, she won the love and respect of the people of Marseilles. She gathered around her a few virtuous women and chose to live in a secluded place, away from the bustling city, dedicating herself to prayer and acts of mercy. She spent her remaining years in service to others, offering kindness and healing to those in need.
It is said that she predicted her own death, and she passed away on August 4. Her memory continues to be honored as a shining example of Christian charity, hospitality, and holiness.
