July 27:

According to tradition, Saint Pantaleon was an ordinary physician during the reign of the Roman Emperor Diocletian. Drawn toward the corrupt and indulgent lifestyle of the imperial court, Pantaleon drifted away from his Christian faith. However, his life was transformed through the guidance of Hermolaus, a devout priest who reminded him of the faith of his mother — a deeply pious Christian woman.

Moved by Hermolaus’ words and his mother’s example, Pantaleon returned to the Christian faith with deep conviction. He gave away all his wealth to the poor and devoted his healing skills to caring for the sick, especially the poorest and most suffering. He dedicated his entire life to serving Christ through acts of mercy.

His open declaration of Christian faith led to his arrest under the orders of Emperor Maximian. Pantaleon was subjected to various brutal tortures, but Christ strengthened him, allowing him to endure them all. Ultimately, he was executed by beheading — liberated from his sufferings and crowned as a martyr.

Saint Pantaleon is venerated as the patron saint of physicians and healers. Many churches in Rome and Constantinople have been dedicated in his name. In Eastern Christianity, he is remembered as a great martyr and miracle-worker, revered for his deep compassion and unwavering faith. His holy relics are preserved in Southern Italy, and devotion to him continues throughout the Christian world.
