Saint James the Greater, son of Zebedee, was born in Galilee and worked as a fisherman alongside his brother John. Together, they became some of the first disciples called by Jesus Christ. Known as one of the “Sons of Thunder” (Boanerges), James was given this title by Jesus Himself, likely referring to the brothers’ zealous and fiery temperament.

To distinguish him from the other apostle named James (James the Less), he is often referred to as James the Greater. Alongside Peter and John, James was a part of Jesus’ inner circle, witnessing events such as the Transfiguration on Mount Tabor and the Agony in the Garden of Gethsemane.

James played an active role in the early Christian mission after the Ascension of Jesus. According to the Acts of the Apostles (Acts 12:1–2), he was the first among the Twelve Apostles to be martyred, executed by beheading in Jerusalem under the order of Herod Agrippa I, around the year 42 or 43 AD. His martyrdom is the only apostolic death recorded in the New Testament.

Though there is no historical certainty, it has been claimed since the 9th century that James’s remains were transferred to Spain, where they rest in Santiago de Compostela. This tradition gave rise to one of Christianity’s most famous pilgrimage routes, the Way of Saint James (Camino de Santiago).

During the Middle Ages, Santiago de Compostela became the third most important pilgrimage site in Christendom, after Jerusalem and Rome. Pilgrims traveled from across Europe through a network of roads and shrines, many of which still exist today.

In Spain, James is venerated under the name “El Señor Santiago” and regarded as the patron saint of knights and warriors. He is said to have miraculously appeared to aid Christian armies in battle, a belief that helped strengthen the Reconquista spirit.

James and his brother John, along with Peter and Andrew, were originally from Bethsaida, a town on the northern shore of the Sea of Galilee. While the exact moment of James’s encounter with Jesus is not known, tradition holds that his mother Salome may have been a relative of Mary, the mother of Jesus, suggesting that James might have known Jesus from an early age.

The deep friendship and companionship James shared with Jesus is evident in the special moments where he was invited to be present. He witnessed the raising of Jairus’s daughter, the Transfiguration, and was called to watch and pray with Jesus during His final hours in Gethsemane.

After the Resurrection, James is believed to have continued preaching the Gospel. However, his ministry was cut short due to political manipulation and religious opposition. King Herod Agrippa I, seeing the growing influence of the new Christian movement as a threat to Judaism, ordered James’s arrest and execution.

Jesus had once told James and John, “You will indeed drink from my cup,” a prophetic indication that they too would suffer and die for their faith. James was the first of the Apostles to give his life for the Gospel, becoming a martyr and a witness of supreme faithfulness.
