Saint Christina was born in the third century into a wealthy and prominent family in the city of Tyre. Her father was the governor of the city, a man deeply committed to pagan idol worship. By the age of eleven, Christina had grown into a remarkably beautiful girl, attracting many suitors. However, her father had other plans—he intended to consecrate her as a priestess of the pagan gods.
To prepare her for this role, he set up a private chamber filled with idols made of gold and silver, and assigned two servants to attend to her. He instructed her to offer incense and devotion before these idols.
According to tradition, an angel of the Lord appeared to Christina in this chamber and revealed to her the truth of the Christian faith, calling her the bride of Christ and foretelling the sufferings she would endure for His sake. Inspired by divine grace and filled with zeal, Christina destroyed all the idols in her room and threw them out the window.
When her father Urbanus came to visit, he noticed the absence of the idols and questioned her. Christina remained silent, but her attendants revealed what had taken place. Furious at her defiance and at her secret conversion to Christianity, Urbanus subjected his daughter to brutal tortures in an attempt to force her to renounce her faith.
Though details vary across historical accounts, the tortures included being scorched with fire, torn with iron hooks, placed inside a burning oven, bound to a spiked wheel, attacked by snakes, and pierced with arrows. Miraculously, Christina survived all these torments, her body remaining unharmed through divine intervention. After Urbanus died, his successor Dion continued the persecutions. Ultimately, Christina was beheaded, thus sealing her martyrdom with blood.
Saint Christina’s unwavering faith, purity, and heroic endurance of torture at such a young age have inspired generations of Christians. She is venerated as a virgin martyr, and her feast is celebrated on July 24th in the Roman Catholic Church.
