The Greek Church Fathers have traditionally regarded Mary Magdalene as distinct from Mary of Bethany, the sister of Martha and Lazarus. However, in various legends and traditions, Mary Magdalene has often been conflated with both the sinful woman who anointed Jesus’ feet (Luke 7:36–50) and Mary of Bethany mentioned in the Gospel of John.
According to the great Pope Gregory the Great in the 6th century AD, all three women are one and the same. That is, the woman from Bethany who turned from a sinful life and became a devoted follower of Christ is none other than Mary Magdalene. This long-held tradition explains why generations have revered Mary Magdalene as the model of repentance.
After the Resurrection of Jesus, Mary Magdalene was the first witness to see the risen Lord, and is often referred to as the beloved disciple of Christ. On Good Friday, she stood at the foot of the cross alongside the Blessed Virgin Mary, enduring those painful hours in steadfast loyalty. On Easter morning, she went to the tomb with other women and it was there, in the garden near the tomb, that Jesus appeared to her.
It was Mary Magdalene who ran to tell the apostles about the Resurrection of Jesus. This prompted Peter and John to run to the tomb to see for themselves. Mary hailed from Magdala, a fishing village situated between Capernaum and Tiberias, by the Sea of Galilee. She was widely known as a great sinner, one who roamed the streets, until she heard Jesus preach about God’s mercy and forgiveness, which led her to transform her life completely.
Saint Mary Magdalene stands as a shining example of great love and divine forgiveness. Remaining close to Jesus, she came to grasp the truth of God’s love for humanity and dedicated her life to bearing witness to that love.
Her feast day is considered one of deep spiritual mystery. The exact location of her burial remains unknown. According to tradition, she spent her final days in a cave in Provence, France, where she is believed to have died a holy death.
Some believe that her relics rest at the Basilica of Saint Maximin in the Maritime Alps. Another tradition holds that she journeyed to Ephesus with Saint John after the Resurrection and was buried there. The 8th-century English pilgrim Saint Willibald reported having seen her tomb during a pilgrimage to the Holy Land.
