Saint Lawrence of Brindisi was born in Brindisi, Naples, in 1559. His baptismal name was Julius Caesar. After completing his education at St. Mark’s College in Venice, he joined the Capuchin Order, where he took the name Lawrence. He later completed his studies at the University of Padua, gaining profound mastery over numerous languages including Hebrew, German, Greek, Bohemian, Spanish, and French, as well as extensive knowledge of Scripture and biblical texts.
Even while still a seminarian, Saint Lawrence of Brindisi earned a reputation as an excellent preacher of the Gospel. After his ordination, he travelled across northern Italy, impressing all with his preaching. The Pope then sent him to Germany with the mission of establishing a Capuchin monastery. Upon arrival, Saint Lawrence was soon appointed chaplain to Emperor Rudolf II, and in 1601, he became a key spiritual leader among the Christian forces fighting against the invading Muslims in Hungary.
As a result of his efforts, a Catholic alliance was formed across Europe. With the goal of persuading Philip III of Spain to join the alliance, the Emperor sent Saint Lawrence to Spain. While in Madrid, the saint established a new monastery. He also played a diplomatic role, resolving conflicts between Spain and the Duchy of Savoy, establishing peace. His compassion for the poor, the sick, and the needy was remarkable and widely known.
In 1602, Saint Lawrence was elected Minister General of the Capuchins. He undertook the task of visiting all the monasteries under his care, effectively guiding and administrating nearly 9,000 friars with great efficiency. Through this, he turned the Capuchin Order into a powerful force in the Catholic Counter-Reformation. He also played an active role in implementing the decisions of the Council of Trent.
Pope Benedict XV said of him:
“Among the exceptional individuals sent by Divine Providence to support the Church in times of hardship, Saint Lawrence holds a most exalted place.”
In 1619, in an effort to protect the people of Naples from a tyrannical governor, Saint Lawrence travelled to Spain to seek the help of King Philip III. However, upon arriving in Lisbon, where the king was residing, he fell ill and died. His body was transferred to Spain and buried in the Church of the Poor Clares in Villafranca del Bierzo.
