Saint Flavian was a Brazilian monk of the monastery of Tilmonon. After the death of Palladius in 498 AD, Emperor Anastasius I appointed Flavian as the Patriarch of Antioch. However, this appointment came with the condition that he accept the Henotikon, a document issued by Byzantine Emperor Zeno in 482 AD without the consent of bishops or church authorities. Despite this, during his tenure as patriarch, Saint Flavian did not oppose the declarations of the Council of Chalcedon, which proclaimed that in Christ, the divine and human natures are united in one person.

As patriarch of Antioch, Flavian, along with Elias, the Patriarch of Jerusalem, stood against the efforts to nullify the declarations of the Council of Chalcedon. Nevertheless, Flavian attempted a mediation by referencing the Chalcedonian decrees in an effort to resolve the ongoing conflict between supporters and opponents of the Council in Antioch.

During 508–509, Flavian faced increasing pressure from the emperor to sign the Henotikon. Additionally, Philoxenus, the bishop of Hierapolis, accused Flavian of supporting the heretical teaching of Nestorianism. In 511, Philoxenus incited Monophysite extremists in the Syrian region to attack Flavian and force him to publicly denounce the Council of Chalcedon.

However, supporters of Chalcedon resisted the attackers and killed them, throwing their bodies into the Orontes River. Monks from the monastery where Flavian had once lived journeyed to Antioch to protect him from the rising threat of Monophysite aggression.

Following these events, Emperor Anastasius embraced the Miaphysite heresy, leading to Flavian and Elias losing imperial support. In 512, Philoxenus convened a synod at Sidon, attended by around 80 anti-Chalcedonian bishops. With the emperor’s backing, the synod condemned, deposed, and exiled both Flavian and Elias. Flavian was sent to Petra, where he passed away in 518, in the peace of the Lord.

The people’s anger at the deposition and exile of Flavian led to the Vitalian Revolt in 513. Because of his steadfast defense of Chalcedonian orthodoxy, Flavian was soon canonized by the Greek Orthodox Church. After initial resistance, he was later recognized as a saint by the Roman Catholic Church as well.
