Saint Justa and Rufina were born into a poor but devout Christian family in Seville, Spain. Justa was born in 268 AD, and Rufina two years later in 270 AD. The sisters earned their living by making clay pottery, and from that modest income, they not only supported themselves but also helped other poor people in their city. Theirs was a life rooted deeply in Christian faith and service, and they never missed an opportunity to offer charity to those in need. For their virtuous and exemplary lives, God rewarded them with the crown of martyrdom.

When idol worshippers asked them to make clay vessels for a pagan festival, the sisters refused. Angered, the pagans attacked their home and destroyed all their pottery. In response, the sisters smashed a statue of Venus, the goddess of the idolaters. This act enraged the authorities, and Governor Diogenianus ordered them to be imprisoned. Despite repeated attempts by the governor to force them to abandon their Christian faith, the sisters remained steadfast. They were then tied to a torture rack and beaten with iron rods.

A statue near the torture site was constantly burning incense, and the sisters were told they would be freed if they offered sacrifices to the idol. But their faith in Christ remained unshaken. So, they were forced to walk barefoot to the Sierra Morena, a journey designed to wear them down. Even that torture failed to weaken their faith. The sisters were then thrown into a prison cell, where they were given no food or water. Despite their suffering, they never renounced Christ.

Justa was the first to succumb to starvation and torture. Her body was thrown into a well, as recorded by historians. Later, Bishop Sabinus recovered her remains and gave her a proper burial.

Governor Diogenianus thought Rufina might give in after seeing her sister’s death. But Rufina remained brave and unyielding in her faith. As a result, the governor ordered her to be thrown into a den of lions. In a miraculous turn, the lion did not harm her but instead remained calm, like a gentle cat.

Furious, Diogenianus then ordered that she be beheaded, and her body was burned. Shortly afterward, Bishop Sabinus recovered her remains too, and in 287 AD, buried her beside her sister. A chapel in the Cathedral of Seville is dedicated to these holy martyrs.

In 1821, a convent was built in Agost, in the Province of Valencia, and it was dedicated to Saints Justa and Rufina. A church in Toledo is also named after them.
