During the reign of Emperor Trajan, Christians faced severe persecution, which continued into the early years of Emperor Hadrian’s rule. Around the year 124, this persecution gradually came to a halt. According to the writings of Saint Paulinus, Emperor Hadrian decided to erect pagan idols on Christian holy sites: a statue of Jupiter on the place where Jesus rose from the dead, a marble statue of Venus on Calvary where Jesus was crucified, and a grotto dedicated to Adonis at Bethlehem, even dedicating the cave of Christ’s birth to this pagan god.
Towards the end of his reign, Hadrian became increasingly cruel. Driven by superstition, he once again turned his wrath toward innocent Christians. At Tibur, about 16 miles from Rome, he built a magnificent palace near a riverbank and filled it with treasures collected from across the empire. Upon completion, it became a site of immoral pagan rituals, beginning with sacrifices to idols. The demons behind these idols supposedly gave the following oracle:
“Symphorosa, a widow, and her sons torment us daily by calling on their God. If they are sacrificed to us, we will grant you your desires.”
Symphorosa was a devout woman living with her seven sons in a garden at Tivoli. She had dedicated her wealth to the poor and to the support of persecuted Christians. She was the widow of Saint Getulius, who was martyred with his brother Amantius. Symphorosa longed to join her family in eternal bliss and had been preparing herself through good deeds and a life of deep devotion.
Heeding the oracle of the false gods and their priests, the superstitious Hadrian ordered that Symphorosa and her sons be brought before him. Joyfully and prayerfully, she came to his court. The emperor first tried to persuade her gently to offer sacrifices to their idols.
But Symphorosa replied courageously:
“My husband Getulius, though once a judge in your court, preferred to suffer for Jesus rather than offer sacrifices to your idols. By his death, he defeated your gods. His martyrdom was shameful to men but a joy to angels. Now, he enjoys eternal life in heaven.”
Angered, the emperor said,
“Either you and your sons offer sacrifice to our gods or you will all be sacrificed to them!”
She replied:
“Your gods will never accept me as a sacrifice. But if I am consumed in fire for the name of Jesus, my death will only intensify the torments your demons endure. It is our joy to offer our lives for the living and true God.”
Hadrian threatened more:
“Sacrifice to our gods or face cruel deaths.”
Symphorosa boldly replied:
“Fear will never conquer me. My desire is to join my husband, who died for his faith in Jesus.”
Then Hadrian ordered that she be taken to the temple of Hercules. First, she was slapped across the face. Then, they tied her by her own hair and hung her up. When no torture could make her waver, he ordered a heavy stone to be tied around her neck and had her thrown into the river. Her brother-in-law Eugenius, the head of the Tiburtine council, buried her body by the roadside near the city.
The next day, Hadrian summoned her seven sons and urged them not to follow their mother’s “stubbornness” but to sacrifice to the pagan gods. When they refused, he subjected them to various brutal tortures. Still failing, he ordered the use of seven different torturing instruments around the temple of Hercules, one for each of the boys. But the brave young men encouraged one another in faith instead of yielding to fear. Eventually, Hadrian gave the order for them to be executed.
Each was killed in a different way:
-
Crescens, the eldest, was beheaded.
-
Julian, the second, was stabbed in the chest.
-
Nemesius, the third, was pierced with a spear.
-
Primitivus was disemboweled.
-
Justin was stabbed in the back.
-
Stacteus was wounded in the side.
-
Eugenius, the youngest, was cut in half through the chest with a sword.
The following day, the emperor had a large pit dug near the temple of Hercules and all their bodies were thrown in together. That place was later called “Septem Biothanati” by the pagan priests, meaning “the Seven Slain.”
Following these brutal executions, there was a brief pause in persecutions for about 18 months. During that time, the Christians gathered the martyrs’ relics and buried them on the Tiburtine Way, between Tivoli and Rome. Later, Pope Stephen I transferred their relics to the church of Holy Angels in the Fish Market in Rome. During the reign of Pope Pius IV, a stone inscription confirming this was discovered.
It was not wealth, noble birth, or position that Symphorosa set as an example for her children. Rather, she inspired them through her faith, her witness to martyrdom, and her constant teaching about the glory of heaven. She taught them to follow the Redeemer by walking the path of humility, compassion, meekness, patience, and charity.
