Saint Alexius was the only son of a wealthy senator in Rome. He was born in Rome during the 5th century and received his education there as well. Inspired by the example of his devout parents, Alexius developed a deep interest in helping the poor from a young age. He understood early in life that acts of charity were investments in heaven, and that the reward for such good deeds would be granted in eternity.
Even as a child, Alexius gave generously to those in need. He never missed an opportunity to help those suffering or in distress. His charitable deeds were an outward expression of the goodness that filled his soul. He believed that those who received help from him were not beggars, but benefactors to whom he was indebted. This eternal outlook brought him joy in every act of charity he performed.
Obeying the wishes of his parents, he married a wealthy and virtuous young woman. But on the very night of his wedding, Alexius left his home secretly and journeyed to a distant land. There, living in utter poverty, he stayed in a small shelter near a church dedicated to the Blessed Virgin Mary. After some time, when people in that region discovered that Alexius belonged to a noble family, he quietly returned to his homeland.
Disguised as a poor pilgrim, he took shelter in a corner of his father’s house, unrecognized. There, enduring the insults and ill-treatment of the household servants, he lived silently for many years with immense patience and humility. It was only just before his death that his parents came to know that this poor man in their home was indeed their long-lost son.
At the time, Honorius was the Roman Emperor and Pope Innocent I was the Bishop of Rome. Recognizing his sanctity, they arranged a solemn and majestic funeral for Saint Alexius on Aventine Hill in Rome. Saint Alexius is honored in the liturgical calendars of the Latin, Greek, Maronite, and Armenian churches.
Until 1216, his remains rested at the original site of burial. When Honorius III became pope, Saint Alexius’ relics were transferred to the ancient church of Saint Boniface, where a new church was built and dedicated jointly to Saint Alexius and Saint Boniface.
