July 16:

Mount Carmel is mentioned in several places throughout the Holy Scriptures. In the 12th century, a group of hermits withdrew to these mountain ranges and, under the patronage and intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary, began to lead a contemplative life. This marked the beginning of the Carmelite Order. Today, devotion to Our Lady of Mount Carmel has spread throughout the entire world. Most believers are familiar with the “Brown Scapular”, the outer garment associated with Our Lady of Mount Carmel.

Through the efforts of Berthold, a crusader, a group of hermits dwelling on Mount Carmel gradually formed a religious community following Western monastic norms around the year 1150. However, unable to withstand the opposition and persecution of the Saracens, they slowly migrated to Europe.

Later, on the night of July 16, 1225, the Blessed Virgin Mary appeared to Pope Honorius III, asking him to officially recognize the Carmelite Order. Even after this approval, the Carmelites continued to suffer frequent persecution. It was during this time that the sixth general of the order, Saint Simon Stock, persistently prayed to the Blessed Mother, asking her to grant them a special sign of her maternal protection.

In response, on July 16, 1251, the Blessed Mother appeared to him, offering the Scapular as a special sign of her love and protection. While giving the Scapular, she said:

“This is a special grace for you and for all Carmelites. Whoever dies wearing this shall not suffer eternal fire.”

For this reason, the Feast of Our Lady of Mount Carmel is also referred to as the Feast of the Scapular. In 1332, this feast was first celebrated among the Carmelite friars, and later, in 1726, Pope Benedict XIII extended it to the Universal Church.

In many religious orders, the scapular is a part of the religious habit. But for Carmelites, it holds unique and defining significance. To share the spiritual benefits associated with the scapular, a smaller version of it began to be given to lay faithful as well. Wearing the scapular devoutly is believed to bring spiritual blessings and aid in the easy release from Purgatory.

Pope John XXII, in a papal document called Bulla Sabbatina, wrote that those who faithfully wear the scapular would be quickly delivered from the fires of purgatory. This teaching was later confirmed by the Sacred Congregation of Indulgences on July 4, 1908, and an official proclamation regarding it was made.
