Saint Bonaventure was born in Italy in the year 1221. He joined the Franciscan Order and went to Paris for his studies. Before long, he was appointed as the General of the Franciscan Order. Due to his efforts to unify and bring coherence to the Order—which was still in its formative stage—he is often referred to as the Second Founder of the Franciscan Order.

“In Bonaventure, we see a remarkable personality. He was renowned for his holiness, wisdom, and greatness. He was gifted with the ability to fulfill the responsibilities entrusted to him. He was dignified, devout, compassionate, full of virtue, and beloved by all. God had endowed him with a grace and charm that drew people toward him.” These words from the historian of the Council of Lyons sum up the description of Saint Bonaventure.

Even in his youth, he was an excellent teacher and a powerful preacher of the Gospel. At the age of just 36, he was elevated to the highest position within the Franciscan Order. He was a leading figure at the Council of Lyons. Thanks to his virtue, wisdom, scholarly depth, and gentle nature, the Greek Church was able to reunite with the Latin Church with little resistance.

Saint Bonaventure was both a keen scholar and a mystic. Because of his profound spiritual insight, he came to be known as the Seraphic Doctor. In philosophy, he was the primary proponent of the Platonic-Augustinian school of thought within the Franciscan tradition. In the intellectual sphere, he was seen as a worthy rival of Saint Thomas Aquinas. While Aristotelian ideas were widespread at the time, Saint Bonaventure took a strong stand against them.

Among his many writings, The Life of Saint Francis, authored by Bonaventure, became one of the most widely accepted works of the Middle Ages.

Contemporaries believed that no one surpassed Saint Bonaventure in gentleness, divine insight, or knowledge. He died in Lyons in 1274 during the Second Council of Lyons, which was convened to bring about unity between the Greek and Latin Churches. Dante includes his name in the list of heavenly dwellers in his great work Paradiso.
